Abstract

An applicator suitable for converting a white-light endoscope into an endoscope for combined white-light/fluorescence imaging is disclosed. The applicator facilitates attachment of an optical element, for example an optical filter, to a distal optical port of an endoscope. The applicator engages with alignment feature on the endoscope's distal end and releasably supports the optical element in an opening that is aligned with the optical port. The optical element is released in a proximal direction by pressing down on an actuator.

Claims (36)

1. An applicator for attaching an optical element to an optical port disposed on a distal end of an endoscope, the applicator having a proximal side and an opposing distal side, the applicator comprising:

a base having an opening and adapted to support the optical element in the opening,

the optical element releasably disposed within the opening;

one or more alignment members extending from the proximal side of the base, and

an actuatable element disposed on the distal side of the base and adapted to transmit a force to the optical element, wherein

the optical element is released in a proximal direction by actuating the actuatable element, and

a first major surface of the optical element is non-adhesive and a second major surface of the optical element facing the optical port is adhesive.

2. The applicator of claim 1 , wherein the actuatable element comprises a resilient membrane disposed on the base, the membrane adapted to transmit the force to the optical element.

3. The applicator of claim 2 , further comprising:

a tip disposed on or integrally formed on the membrane and facing the optical element.

4. The applicator of claim 1 , wherein the one or more alignment members are configured to engage with a corresponding registration feature disposed on the distal end of the endoscope.

5. The applicator of claim 1 , wherein the optical element comprises an optical filter.

6. The applicator of claim 5 , wherein the optical filter comprises polycarbonate.

7. The applicator of claim 1 , wherein the adhesive side of the optical element is supported on a shoulder or recess extending into the opening.

8. The applicator of claim 1 , wherein the adhesive side of the optical element is supported by a metal disk disposed on the base, the metal disk having an opening and supporting the optical element in the opening.

9. The applicator of claim 1 , wherein the base comprises one or more gripping surfaces for handling the applicator.

10. An applicator adapted to engage with a distal end of an endoscope having a registration feature and an optical port, the applicator comprising:

a base having at least one alignment member that is configured to engage with the registration feature of the endoscope's distal end,

an optical element releasably disposed in or on an opening of the base and in alignment with the optical port in the endoscope's distal end when the at least one alignment member engages with the registration feature of the endoscope's distal end, a first major surface of the optical element is non-adhesive and a second major surface of the optical element facing the optical port is adhesive, and

an actuator disposed on or in the base and configured to release the optical element from the base and to urge the optical element in a proximal direction under an external force applied to the actuator.

11. The applicator of claim 1 , further comprising:

an enclosure for packaging the applicator in a sterile environment.

12. The applicator of claim 10 , further comprising:

an enclosure for packaging the applicator in a sterile environment.

13. The applicator of claim 1 , wherein the actuatable element further comprises:

a piston housing extending from the distal side of the base; and

a piston slideably supported in the piston housing and adapted to transmit the force to the optical element.

14. The applicator of claim 13 , wherein the piston comprises a compliant tip facing the optical element.

15. The applicator of claim 14 , wherein the compliant tip comprises silicone rubber.

16. The applicator of claim 1 , wherein the actuatable element comprises a tip adapted to transmit the force to the optical element and at least one strut connecting the tip to the base.

17. The applicator of claim 1 , wherein the one or more alignment members and the piston housing are integrally formed with the base.

18. A kit for converting a white-light endoscope to an endoscope for combined white-light/fluorescence imaging, comprising:

an applicator according to claim 1 enclosed in a sterile package;

one or more cleaning implements;

a cleaning solution for cleaning the optical port; and

a removal tool for removing the optical element following an endoscopic procedure.
