Abstract

A method for remapping a Media Access Control (MAC) address mapped to a virtual IP address. The method includes examining an activity data file to identify the virtual IP address mapped to the MAC address and remapping the identified MAC address to an IP address. The virtual IP address may be identified utilizing a criteria, such as by determining that the virtual IP address may have two or more mapped MAC addresses. Other criteria may also be suitably employed. A portion of the IP address may be automatically generated. A user may be queried to confirm the generated portion of the IP address. The portion of the IP address may be determined based on prior user entrance of an IP address. The portion of the IP address may be predetermined by a user assigning a naming convention.

Claims (38)

1. A method comprising:

examining, by a network analysis device, an activity data file utilizing a criteria to identify a MAC address mapped to a virtual IP address, the virtual IP address being a translation of a private IP address associated with the MAC address, and different from the private IP address;

remapping, by the network analysis device, the identified MAC address to a new IP address;

at least one of modifying the activity data file and creating a modified activity data file, based on the remapping, to facilitate a determination of performance statistics related to communications associated with the MAC address based on the remapping of the identified MAC address to the new IP address; and

presenting information based on the remapping.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein: the MAC address is a first MAC address, a second MAC address is mapped to the virtual IP address, and the criteria utilized for examining the activity data file includes identifying the virtual IP address by determining that the virtual IP address has at least two mapped MAC addresses.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the criteria utilized for examining the activity data file includes examining an X-Forwarded-For (XFF) HTTP header to determine the new IP address.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the remapping includes automatically generating at least a portion of the new IP address.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the remapping includes querying a user to confirm the generated portion of the new IP address.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the portion of the new IP address is determined based on prior user entry of an IP address that includes the portion of the new IP address.

7. The method of claim 4 , wherein the portion of the new IP address is predetermined by a user assigning a naming convention.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the remapping includes querying a user to enter a portion of the new IP address.

9. The method of claim 1 , including assigning a tier to each MAC address recorded in the activity data file.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the MAC address is a first MAC address, and a second MAC address is mapped to the virtual IP address, the method including providing a user interface (UI) depicting the virtual IP address and the first and second MAC addresses.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the UI includes a tree-view depicting the virtual IP address and the first and second MAC addresses.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the table view includes an indication of the virtual IP address and a field for the new IP address.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the table view includes a remapped MAC address.

14. The method of claim 1 , the method including providing a user interface (UI) depicting the MAC address, wherein the UI includes a table view depicting the MAC address.

15. The method of claim 1 , including saving the remapping.

16. The method of claim 1 , including determining a number of tiers corresponding to activity recorded in the activity data file.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the new IP address corresponds to the private IP address.

18. A non-transitory computer readable medium that stores a program that, when executed by a processor, causes the processor to:

examine an activity data file utilizing a criteria to identify a virtual IP address mapped to a MAC address, the virtual IP address being a translation of a private IP address associated with the MAC address, and different from the private IP address;

remap the identified MAC address to a new IP address;

at least one of modifying the activity data file and creating a modified activity data file, based on the remapping, to facilitate a determination of one or more performance statistics based on the remapped identified MAC address to the new IP address; and

presenting information based on the remapping.

19. The medium of claim 18 , wherein the program causes the processor to generate at least a portion of the new IP address.

20. The medium of claim 19 , wherein the program causes the processor to query a user to confirm the generated portion of the new IP address.

21. The medium of claim 19 , wherein the program causes the processor to generate the portion of the new IP address based on prior user entry of an IP address that includes the portion of the new IP address.

22. The medium of claim 19 , wherein the program causes the processor to generate the portion of the new IP address based on a user assigned naming convention.

23. The medium of claim 18 , wherein the program causes the processor to query a user to enter at least a portion of the new IP address.

24. The medium of claim 18 , wherein the program causes the processor to assign a tier to each MAC address recorded in the activity data file.

25. The medium of claim 18 , wherein: the MAC address is a first MAC address, a second MAC address is mapped to the virtual IP address, and the program causes the processor to provide a user interface (UI) depicting the virtual IP address and the first and second MAC addresses.

26. The medium of claim 25 , wherein the UI includes a tree-view depicting the virtual IP address and the first and second MAC addresses.

27. The medium of claim 26 , wherein the program causes the processor to depict the MAC address in a table view.

28. The medium of claim 18 , wherein the program causes the processor to provide a user interface (UI) depicting the virtual IP address and the MAC address.

29. The medium of claim 18 , wherein the criteria utilized for examining the activity data file includes an examination of an X-Forwarded-For (XFF) HTTP header to determine the new IP address.

30. The medium of claim 18 , wherein the new IP address corresponds to the private IP address.
