Abstract

A continuously variable planetary gear set is described having a generally tubular idler, a plurality of balls distributed radially about the idler, each ball having a tiltable axis about which it rotates, a rotatable input disc positioned adjacent to the balls and in contact with each of the balls, a rotatable output disc positioned adjacent to the balls opposite the input disc and in contact with each of the balls such that each of the balls makes three-point contact with the input disc, the output disc and the idler, and a rotatable cage adapted to maintain the axial and radial position of each of the balls, wherein the axes of the balls are oriented by the axial position of the idler.

Claims (43)

1. A power train comprising:

a first source of rotational power;

an electric generator;

a plurality of balls, each ball having an internal axis of rotation configured to tilt in operation;

a first disc in contact with the balls, the first disc configured to be nonrotatable;

a second disc in contact with the balls;

a rotatable cage adapted to support the plurality of balls axially and radially, the rotatable cage coupled to the first source of rotational power; and

an idler in contact with the balls and located radially inward of the balls, the idler coupled to the electric generator.

2. The power train of claim 1 , further comprising an electric motor operably coupled to the second disc.

3. The power train of claim 1 , wherein the first source of rotational power is coupled coaxially with the rotatable cage.

4. The power train of claim 3 , wherein the electric generator is coupled coaxially with the idler.

5. The power train of claim 4 , further a first gear coupled to the second disc, the first gear mounted on a first axis that is coaxial with the second disc.

6. The power train of claim 5 , further comprising a second gear coupled to the first gear, the second gear mounted on a second axis that is parallel to the first axis.

7. The power train of claim 6 , further comprising an electric motor coupled to the second gear.

8. The power train of claim 7 , further comprising a differential operably coupled to the second gear.

9. The power train of claim 8 , wherein the electric motor comprises a shaft having a third axis that is parallel to the second axis.

10. The power train of claim 9 , further comprising a third gear that couples the second gear to the shaft of the motor.

11. The power train of claim 10 , further comprising a torque transfer means coupled to the second gear, and further comprising a fourth gear that couples said torque transfer means to the differential.

12. A power train comprising:

an electric generator;

an electric motor;

an internal combustion engine;

a plurality of balls, each ball having an internal axis of rotation configured to tilt in operation;

a first disc in contact with the balls, the first disc configured to be nonrotatable;

a second disc in contact with the balls, the second disc operably coupled to the electric motor;

a rotatable cage adapted to support the plurality of balls axially and radially, the rotatable cage coupled to the internal combustion engine; and

an idler in contact with the balls and located radially inward of the balls, the idler coupled to the electric generator.

13. The power train of claim 12 , wherein the internal combustion engine is coupled coaxially with the rotatable cage.

14. The power train of claim 13 , wherein the electric generator is coupled coaxially with the idler.

15. The power train of claim 14 , wherein the electric motor is mounted on axis that is parallel to a rotational axis of the second disc.

16. A power train comprising:

a plurality of balls, each ball having an internal axis of rotation configured to tilt in operation;

a first disc configured to react a rolling movement of the balls, the first disc configured to be nonrotatable;

a second disc, the second disc configured to transfer torque to and/or from the balls;

a rotatable cage adapted to constrain axial and radial movements of the balls, the rotatable cage configured to transfer torque to and/or from the balls;

an idler located radially inward of the balls, the idler configured to transfer torque to and/or from the balls;

an electric generator coupled to the idler and mounted coaxially with the idler;

a first source of rotational power coupled to the second disc; and

a second source of rotational power coupled to the rotatable cage.

17. The power train of claim 16 , wherein the first source of rotational power comprises an electric motor.

18. The power train of claim 17 , wherein the second source of rotational power comprise an internal combustion engine.

19. The power train of claim 18 , wherein the electric motor comprises a motor shaft that is parallel to an axis of rotation of the second disc.

20. The power train of claim 19 , further comprising a differential, and wherein the second disc is operably coupled to the differential.
