Abstract

A continuously variable planetary gear set is described having a generally tubular idler, a plurality of balls distributed radially about the idler, each ball having a tiltable axis about which it rotates, a rotatable input disc positioned adjacent to the balls and in contact with each of the balls, a rotatable output disc positioned adjacent to the balls opposite the input disc and in contact with each of the balls such that each of the balls makes three-point contact with the input disc, the output disc and the idler, and a rotatable cage adapted to maintain the axial and radial position of each of the balls, wherein the axes of the balls are oriented by the axial position of the idler.

Claims (30)

1. A drive train comprising:

a motor-generator;

a plurality of balls, each ball having an internal, tiltable axis of rotation;

a first disc in contact with the balls, the first disc configured to be selectively coupled to the motor-generator;

a second disc in contact with the balls; and

a rotatable cage configured to support the plurality of balls axially and radially.

2. The drive train of claim 1 , further comprising an idler located radially inward of and in contact with the balls.

3. The drive train of claim 1 , wherein the rotatable cage is configured to be selectively coupled to the motor generator.

4. The drive train of claim 3 , wherein further comprising a combustion engine, and wherein one or both of the first disc and the rotatable cage are configured to be selectively coupled to the combustion engine.

5. A drive train comprising:

a motor having a motor stator and a motor rotor;

a first plurality of balls, each ball having an internal, tiltable axis of rotation;

a first disc in contact with the first plurality of balls, the first disc configured to be selectively coupled to the motor rotor;

a second disc in contact with the first plurality of balls; and

a first rotatable cage configured to support the first plurality of balls axially and radially.

6. The drive train of claim 5 , further comprising a first idler located radially inward of and in contact with the first plurality of balls.

7. The drive train of claim 6 , further comprising a second plurality of balls, a third disc in contact with the second plurality of balls, wherein the third disc is configured to be selectively coupled to the motor rotor, further comprising a fourth disc in contact with the second plurality of balls, and further comprising a second idler located radially inward of and in contact with the second plurality of balls.

8. The drive train of claim 7 , further comprising a second rotatable cage configured support the second plurality of balls radially and axially, and further configured to be selectively coupled to the motor rotor.

9. The drive train of claim 8 , wherein the motor rotor is rigidly coupled to the first and third discs.

10. The drive train of claim 8 , wherein the motor rotor is rigidly coupled to first and second rotatable cages.

11. The drive train of claim 8 , wherein the motor rotor is coupled to the first and third discs, and wherein at least one of the second disc, fourth disc, first rotatable cage, second rotatable cage, first idler, and second idler is coupled to a load.

12. The drive train of claim 6 , wherein the first idler is configured to transmit power.

13. The drive train of claim 12 , wherein at least one of the first rotatable cage and the first idler is configured be coupled to a load.

14. The drive train of claim 12 , further comprising a combustion engine, and wherein the first rotatable cage and/or the idler are configured to be selectively coupled to the combustion engine.

15. The drive train of claim 14 , wherein the motor rotor is coupled to the first disc, the combustion engine is coupled to the idler, and the rotatable cage is coupled to the load.

16. The drive train of claim 14 , wherein the motor rotor is coupled to the rotatable cage, the combustion engine is coupled to the first disc, and the idler is coupled to the load.

17. The drive train of claim 14 , wherein the motor rotor is coupled to the idler, the combustion engine is coupled to the first disc, and the rotatable cage is coupled to the load.

18. The drive train of claim 14 , wherein the motor rotor is coupled to the first disc, the combustion engine is coupled to the rotatable cage, and the idler is coupled to the load.

19. The drive train of claim 14 , wherein the motor rotor is coupled to the rotatable cage, the combustion engine is coupled to the idler, and one of the first and second discs is coupled to the load.

20. The drive train of claim 14 , wherein the motor rotor is coupled to the idler, the combustion engine is coupled to the cage, and one of the first and second discs is coupled to the load.
