Abstract

A continuously variable planetary gear set is described having a generally tubular idler, a plurality of balls distributed radially about the idler, each ball having a tiltable axis about which it rotates, a rotatable input disc positioned adjacent to the balls and in contact with each of the balls, a rotatable output disc positioned adjacent to the balls opposite the input disc and in contact with each of the balls such that each of the balls makes three-point contact with the input disc, the output disc and the idler, and a rotatable cage adapted to maintain the axial and radial position of each of the balls, wherein the axes of the balls are oriented by the axial position of the idler.

Claims (62)

1. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) comprising:

a longitudinal axis;

a plurality of balls, each ball having a tillable axis of rotation, the plurality of balls arranged on a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, the plurality of balls arranged angularly about the longitudinal axis;

an input disc in contact with the plurality of balls, wherein the input disc is arranged radially outward relative to a center of each of the balls, and wherein the input disc is coaxial with the longitudinal axis;

an output disc in contact with the plurality of balls, wherein the output disc is arranged radially outward relative to a center of each of the balls, and wherein the output disc is coaxial with the longitudinal axis;

a generally cylindrical idler in contact with the balls, the idler located radially inward of the balls and mounted coaxially about the longitudinal axis;

a rotatable cage adapted to support the plurality of balls radially and angularly;

a planetary gear set mounted coaxially about the longitudinal axis, the planetary gear set comprising:

a ring gear;

a plurality of planet gears;

a plurality of planet axles that support the planet gears;

a planet carrier configured to receive, support, and drive the planet axles; and

a sun gear;

wherein the planet axles are operably coupled to the input disc; and

wherein the sun gear is operably coupled to the rotatable cage.

2. The CVT of claim 1 , further comprising an output shaft coupled to the output disc.

3. The CVT of claim 1 , further comprising an output shaft coupled to the rotatable cage.

4. The CVT of claim 1 , further comprising an output shaft coupled to the idler.

5. The CVT of claim 1 , wherein the ring gear is non-rotatable about the longitudinal axis.

6. The CVT of claim 1 , further comprising a torque input source coupled to the planet carrier.

7. The CVT of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of legs configured to facilitate operably coupling the idler with the plurality of balls.

8. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) comprising:

a longitudinal axis;

a plurality of balls, each ball having a tiltable axis of rotation, the plurality of balls arranged on a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, the balls arranged angularly about the longitudinal axis;

a first disc in contact with the plurality of balls, wherein the first disc is arranged radially outward relative to a center of each of the balls, and wherein the first disc is coaxial with the longitudinal axis;

a second disc in contact with the plurality of balls, wherein the second disc is arranged radially outward relative to a center of each of the balls, and wherein the second disc is coaxial with the longitudinal axis;

a generally cylindrical idler in contact with the balls, the idler located radially inward of the balls and mounted coaxially about the longitudinal axis;

a rotatable cage adapted to support the plurality of balls radially and angularly;

a plurality of legs configured to facilitate operably coupling the idler with the plurality of balls;

a planetary gear set mounted coaxially about the longitudinal axis, the planetary gear set comprising:

a ring gear;

a plurality of planet gears;

a plurality of planet axles that support the planet gears;

a planet carrier configured to receive, support, and drive the planet axles; and

a sun gear; and

wherein the sun gear is operably coupled to the rotatable cage.

10. The CVT of claim 8 , further comprising an output shaft coupled to the rotatable cage.

11. The CVT of claim 8 , further comprising an output shaft coupled to the idler.

12. The CVT of claim 8 , wherein the ring gear is non-rotatable about the longitudinal axis.

13. The CVT of claim 8 , further comprising a torque input source coupled to the planet carrier.

14. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) comprising:

a longitudinal axis;

a plurality of balls, each ball having a tiltable axis of rotation, the plurality of balls arranged on a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, the balls arranged angularly about the longitudinal axis;

a first disc in contact with the plurality of balls, wherein the first disc is arranged radially outward relative to a center of each of the balls, and wherein the first disc is coaxial with the longitudinal axis;

a second disc in contact with the plurality of balls, wherein the second disc is arranged radially outward relative to a center of each of the balls, and wherein the second disc is coaxial with the longitudinal axis;
