Abstract

One embodiment of the present invention relates to a network element that is configured to be associated with a network having a number of nodes. A node is configured to receive a beacon signal from a master node and at least one relayed beacon signal from at least one proxy node, where the at least one proxy node transmits the at least one relayed beacon signal based at least in part on the beacon signal. The node is further configured to select one of the beacon and relayed beacon signals and analyze the selected signal to determine a timeslot reserved for node admission requests. Other methods and devices are also disclosed.

Claims (22)

1. A network having a number of nodes admitted thereto, comprising:

a first node seeking admission to the network, the first node configured to receive a beacon signal from a second node admitted to the network, the beacon signal including a media access plan that assigns the number of nodes to a number of respective transmission time slots and also specifies at least one time slot reserved for node admission requests;

the first node further configured to receive a relayed beacon signal from a proxy node during a transmission time slot assigned to the proxy node, where the relayed beacon signal includes the media access plan and is generated by the proxy node in response to the proxy node receiving the beacon signal;

the first node further configured to analyze the media access plan to determine a timeslot reserved for node admission requests and request admission to the network by transmitting an admission request during the timeslot reserved for node admission requests.

2. The network of claim 1 , where the first node is further configured to transmit the admission request to include an address of the second node during the admission request timeslot.

3. The network of claim 1 , where the first node is further configured to transmit the admission request to include an address of a transmit proxy node during the admission request timeslot, where the transmit proxy node is configured to forward the admission request to the second node on behalf of the first node.

4. The network of claim 1 , where the first node is further configured to remain silent without transmitting on the network during transmission time slots reserved for the number of nodes admitted to the network.

5. The network of claim 1 , where the first node is configured to communicate via signals grouped into access super-cycles, the access super-cycles including a number of access cycles where at least one pulse of the beacon signal occurs between successive access cycles.

6. The network of claim 5 , where a number of relayed beacon signals corresponding to a number of proxy nodes associated with the second node is included within a single access cycle.

7. The network of claim 5 , where a number of relayed beacon signals corresponding to a number of proxy nodes associated with the second node is spread over at least two of the number of access cycles within a given access super-cycle.

8. The network of claim 1 , where the first node is configured to make requests to dynamically change its status between being a hidden node that is unable to bi-directionally communicate with the second node at a given time and being a network node that can bi-directionally communicate with the second node at another given time.

9. The network of claim 1 , where the network is a home network.

10. A method for communicating over a network and to be carried out on a first node, comprising:

determining whether a received signal is a beacon signal transmitted by a second node or a relayed beacon signal transmitted by a proxy node in response to the proxy node receiving the beacon signal, where the beacon signal and the relayed beacon signal each include a media access plan that assigns a number of nodes admitted to the network to a number of respective transmission time slots and also specify at least one transmission time slot reserved for node admission requests;

transmitting an admission request from the first node during a transmission timeslot reserved for node admission requests.

11. The method of claim 10 further comprising:

evaluating whether an access response is received within a predetermined time period as measured from the transmission of the admission request.

12. The method of claim 11 , when the access response is not received within the predetermined time period, further comprising:

providing control signals that facilitate the transmission of an access request to a transmit proxy node during the transmission timeslot reserved for admission requests; and

evaluating whether an access response is received within another predetermined time period.

13. The network of claim 1 , where the media access plan specifies a number of relayed beacon timeslots corresponding to a number of proxy nodes associated with the second node, where a proxy node is to transmit its relayed beacon signal during the relayed beacon timeslot corresponding to the proxy node.

14. The method of claim 10 , where the media access plan specifies a number of relayed beacon timeslots corresponding to a number of proxy nodes associated with the second node, where a proxy node is to transmit its relayed beacon signal during the relayed beacon timeslot corresponding to the proxy node.
