Abstract

An embodiment of the present invention includes a calibration system employed in a multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) system for beamforming and receiving a plurality of streams. The system includes a first calibration circuit responsive to inphase (I) and quadrature (Q) pairs of stream and operative to calibrate each I and Q pair and a second calibration circuit responsive to the calibrated I and Q pairs for all streams, wherein the first and second calibration circuits perform calibration in the time domain.

Claims (9)

1. A universal multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) beamforming system for receiving a plurality of streams comprising:

a calibration system including,

a first calibration circuit responsive to inphase (I) and quadrature (Q) pairs of streams and operative to calibrate each I and Q pair, the first calibration circuit responsive to a first, second and third streams, each of the first, second and third streams having a group delay associated therewith, the second stream having the longest group delay out of the first, second and third streams, the first calibration circuit including a plurality of group delay circuits and a plurality of phase offset circuits, each of the first, second and third streams being processed by a unique one of the plurality of group delay circuits and a unique one of the phase offset circuits and the group delay circuit for processing the first stream is operative to compensate for the group delay of the first stream, the compensated first stream processed by one of the phase offset circuits, and the group delay circuit for processing the second stream is operative to compensate for the group delay of the second stream, the compensated second stream processed by one of the phase offset circuits, and the group delay circuit for processing the third stream is operative to compensate for the group delay of the third stream, the first calibration circuit operative to generate a calibrated I/Q pair for each of the first, second and third streams; and

a second calibration circuit responsive to the calibrated first and third calibrated I/Q pairs and including a plurality of phase correction circuits and a plurality of group correction circuits, a unique phase correction circuit for each of the first and third streams and a unique group correction circuit for each of the first and third streams, the phase correction circuit for mixing a corresponding calibrated I/Q pair with a phase and providing the mixed output to the corresponding group correction circuit, each of the group correction circuits operative to correct the delay of the first and third streams for demodulation and decoding, the first, second and third calibrated streams are output “after phrase ” operative to correct the delay of the first and third streams.

2. A calibration system, as recited in claim 1 , wherein the first calibration circuit includes N group delay circuits, wherein ‘N’ is an integer representing the number of streams.

3. A calibration system, as recited in claim 2 , wherein the first calibration circuit is coupled to receive the streams from a plurality of receivers that is responsive to the output of a plurality of transmitters, the first calibration circuit being operative to equalize the overall phase between each transmitter and receiver channel.

4. A calibration system, as recited in claim 1 , wherein the second calibration circuit is further operative to use fast frequency transform (FFT) to perform time domain to frequency domain translation.

5. A calibration system, as recited in claim 1 , wherein the calibration system is operative to receive an orthogonal frequency domain multiplexing (OFDM) signal, in packets, and operative to verify that the received OFDM signal is OFDM and further operative to verify that the signal has been properly received.

6. A calibration system, as recited in claim 1 , wherein the second calibrated I/Q pair is provided by the first calibration circuit for demodulation and decoding.
