Abstract

Disclosed herein is a composition comprising a thermoplastic polymer; about 10 to about 60 weight percent of a dielectric filler having a dielectric constant greater than or equal to about 25 when measured at 900 megahertz; and about 1 to about 10 weight percent of a fibrous composition, the weight percent being based on the total weight of the composition. Disclosed herein too is a method comprising melt blending a composition comprising a thermoplastic polymer; about 10 to about 60 weight percent of a dielectric filler having a dielectric constant greater than or equal to about 25 when measured at 900 megahertz; and about 1 to about 10 weight percent of a fibrous composition, the weight percent being based on the total weight of the composition.

Claims (33)

1 . a composition comprising:

a thermoplastic polymer;

about 10 to about 60 weight percent of a dielectric filler having a dielectric constant greater than or equal to about 25 when measured at 900 megahertz; and

about 1 to about 10 weight percent of a fibrous composition, the weight percent being based on the total weight of the composition.

2 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the thermoplastic polymer comprises a blend of polymers, copolymers, terpolymers, or combinations comprising at least one of the foregoing thermoplastic polymers.

The composition of claim 1 , wherein the thermoplastic polymer comprises an oligomer, a homopolymer, a copolymer, a block copolymer, an alternating block copolymer, a random polymer, a random copolymer, a random block copolymer, a graft copolymer, a star block copolymer, a dendrimer, or a combination comprising at last one of the foregoing thermoplastic polymers.

4 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the dielectric filler comprises fibers having an average aspect ratio greater than or equal to about 5.

5 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the dielectric filler comprises a ceramic filler.

6 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the dielectric filler comprises inorganic oxides, metal oxides, silicates, borides, carbides, nitrides, perovskites and perovskite derivatives, or a combination comprising at least one of the foregoing ceramic fillers.

The composition of claim 5 , wherein the ceramic fillers are metal oxides of alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, transition metals, metalloids or poor metals; calcium oxide, silicon dioxide, cerium oxide, magnesium oxide, titanium oxide, zinc oxide, copper oxide, cerium oxide, niobium oxide, tantalum oxide, yttrium oxide, zirconium oxide, aluminum oxide, CaTiO 3 , MgZrSrTiO 6 , MgTiO 3 , MgAl 2 O 4 , BaZrO 3 , BaSnO 3 , BaNb 2 O 6 , BaTa 2 O 6 , WO 3 , MnO 2 , SrZrO 3 , SnTiO 4 , ZrTiO 4 , CaZrO 3 , CaSnO 3 , CaWO 4 , MgTa 2 O 6 , MgZrO 3 , La 2 O 3 , CaZrO 3 , MgSnO 3 , MgNb 2 O 6 , SrNb 2 O 6 , MgTa 2 O 6 , Ta 2 O 3 , Na 2 SiO 3 , LiAlSiO 4 , Li 4 SiO 4 , BaTiSi 3 O 9 , Al 2 Si 2 O 7 , ZrSiO 4 , KAlSi 3 O 8 , NaAlSi 3 O 8 , CaAl 2 Si 2 O 8 , CaMgSi 2 O 6 , Zn 2 SiO 4 , LaB 6 , CeB 6 , SrB 6 , CaB 6 , TiB 2 , ZrB 2 , VB 2 , TaB 2 , CrB, CrB 2 , MoB 2 , Mo 2 B 5 , MoB, W 2 B 5 , silicon carbide, tungsten carbide, tantalum carbide, iron carbide, titanium carbide, silicon nitride, boron nitride, titanium nitride, aluminum nitride, molybdenum nitride, BaTiO 3 , SrTiO 3 , barium strontium titanate, strontium-doped lanthanum manganate, LaAlO 3 , CaCu 3 Ti 4 O 12 , CdCu 3 Ti 4 O 12 , Ca 1-x La x MnO 3 , (Li, Ti) doped NiO, lanthanum strontium copper oxides (LSCO), YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 , lead zirconate titanate, lanthanum-modified lead zirconate titanate, or a combination comprising at least one of the foregoing ceramic fillers.

8 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the dielectric filler comprises barium titanate and titanium dioxide.

The composition of claim 1 , wherein fibrous composition comprises fibers that have an average aspect ratio greater than or equal to about 5; the fibers comprising whiskers, needles, rods, nanorods, tubes, strands, elongated platelets, lamellar platelets, ellipsoids, micro-fibers, nanofibers, nanotubes, elongated fullerenes, vapor grown carbon fibers, or a combination comprising at least one of the foregoing fibers.

10 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the fibrous composition comprises electrically conducting fibers or electrically insulating fibers.

11 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the fibrous composition comprises metal fibers, metal coated fibers, carbon fibers, or a combination comprising at least one of the foregoing fibers.

12 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the fibrous composition comprises stainless steel fibers.

13 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the fibrous composition comprises zinc oxide whiskers.

14 . An article that comprises the composition of claim 1 .

15 . A composition comprising:

a thermoplastic polymer;

a dielectric filler; and

a fibrous composition; the composition having a dielectric constant of about 4 to about 15 measured at 900 MHz and an impact strength of about 40 to about 100 Joules per meter when tested according to ASTM D 256.

The composition of claim 15 , having a melt viscosity that is at least 10% less than the melt viscosity of a comparative composition at the same temperature; the composition and the comparative composition having approximately the same dielectric constant in the solid state at the same temperature; the comparative composition not containing the fibrous composition.

17 . The composition of claim 15 , wherein the dielectric filler has a dielectric constant of greater than or equal to about 25 when measured at 900 MHz.

18 . The composition of claim 15 , wherein the fibrous composition comprises fibers having an aspect ratio of greater than or equal to about 5.

19 . An article comprising the composition of claim 15 .

20 . A method comprising:

melt blending a composition comprising:

a thermoplastic polymer;

about 10 to about 60 weight percent of a dielectric filler having a dielectric constant greater than or equal to about 25 when measured at 900 megahertz; and

about 1 to about 10 weight percent of a fibrous composition, the weight percent being based on the total weight of the composition.

21 . The method of claim 20 , further comprising extruding the composition.

22 . The method of claim 21 , further comprising injection molding the composition.

23 . An article manufactured by the method of claim 20 .
