Abstract

Systems for fitting an implantable cochlear stimulator to a patient include an interface unit configured to display a graphical representation of an implant fitting line as part of a graphical user interface. The implant fitting line has a slope and a horizontal position and represents a mapping relationship between a plurality of audio frequencies and a plurality of stimulation sites within a cochlea of the patient. The interface unit is further configured to facilitate adjustment of the slope and/or horizontal position of the fitting line.

Claims (28)

1. A system for fitting an implantable cochlear stimulator to a patient, said system comprising:

an interface unit configured to

display a graphical representation of a substantially linear implant fitting line as part of a graphical user interface, said implant fitting line having a slope and a horizontal position and representing a mapping relationship between a plurality of audio frequencies and a plurality of stimulation sites within a cochlea of said patient; and

facilitate adjustment via said graphical user interface of said slope of said fitting line to substantially match a slope of an intrinsic line that represents a relationship between locations within the cochlea and a plurality of audio frequencies as actually perceived by the patient, said adjustment based on a response of said patient to a stimulus current applied by said cochlear stimulator to a subset of said stimulation sites in accordance with said mapping relationship defined by said fitting line.

The system of claim 1 , wherein said interface unit is further configured to facilitate adjustment of said horizontal position of said fitting line to substantially match a horizontal position of said intrinsic line via said graphical user interface based on said response of said patient to said stimulus current.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein said adjustment of said horizontal position of said fitting line comprises an adjustment of a horizontal axis intercept of said fitting line.

4. The system of claim 2 , wherein said interface unit is further configured to shift said horizontal position of said fitting line in a first direction if an overall pitch of said audio signal is perceived by said patient as being too high.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein said interface unit is further configured to shift said horizontal position of said fitting line in a second direction opposite said first direction if an overall pitch of said audio signal is perceived by said patient as being too low.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein said audio signal comprises at least one or more of a musical tune and human speech.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein said interface unit is further configured to adjust said slope of said fitting line if said patient perceives said audio signal as being harmonically out of tune.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein said adjustment of said slope of said fitting line is configured to adjust said mapping relationship between said plurality of audio frequencies and said plurality of stimulation sites.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein said interface unit comprises a display monitor.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein said interface unit is further configured to facilitate adjustment of said horizontal position of said fitting line via said graphical user interface based on a response of said patient to an additional stimulus current applied by said cochlear stimulator to an additional subset of said stimulation sites in accordance with said mapping relationship defined by said fitting line;

wherein said additional subset of said stimulation sites corresponds to one or more audio frequencies within an additional audio signal that is presented to said patient.

11. A system for fitting an implantable cochlear stimulator to a patient, said system comprising:

an interface unit configured to

display a graphical representation of a substantially linear implant fitting line as part of a graphical user interface, said implant fitting line having a slope and a horizontal position and representing a mapping relationship between a plurality of audio frequencies and a plurality of stimulation sites within a cochlea of said patient; and

facilitate adjustment via said graphical user interface of said horizontal position of said fitting line to substantially match a horizontal position of an intrinsic line that represents a relationship between locations within the cochlea and a plurality of audio frequencies as actually perceived by the patient, said adjustment based on a response of said patient to a stimulus current applied by said cochlear stimulator to a subset of said stimulation sites in accordance with said mapping relationship defined by said fitting line.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein said interface unit is further configured to facilitate adjustment of said slope of said fitting line to substantially match a slope of said intrinsic line via said graphical user interface based on said response of said patient to said stimulus current.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein said adjustment of said horizontal position of said fitting line comprises an adjustment of a horizontal axis intercept of said fitting line.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein said interface unit is further configured to shift said horizontal position of said fitting line in a first direction if an overall pitch of said audio signal is perceived by said patient as being too high.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein said interface unit is further configured to shift said horizontal position of said fitting line in a second direction opposite said first direction if an overall pitch of said audio signal is perceived by said patient as being too low.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein said audio signal comprises at least one or more of a musical tune and human speech.

17. The system of claim 11 , wherein said interface unit is further configured to adjust said slope of said fitting line if said patient perceives said audio signal as being harmonically out of tune.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein said adjustment of said slope of said fitting line is configured to adjust said mapping relationship between said plurality of audio frequencies and said plurality of stimulation sites.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein said interface unit comprises a display monitor.

20. The system of claim 11 , wherein said interface unit is further configured to facilitate adjustment of said slope of said fitting line via said graphical user interface based on a response of said patient to an additional stimulus current applied by said cochlear stimulator to an additional subset of said stimulation sites in accordance with said mapping relationship defined by said fitting line;

wherein said additional subset of said stimulation sites corresponds to one or more audio frequencies within an additional audio signal that is presented to said patient.
