Abstract

A stent, or device for repair and reconstruction of the spinal disc wall, or annulus fibrosus, after surgical incision or pathologic rupture, which is inserted through an aperture into the subannular space. The stent has radial extensions which are caused or allowed to expand into an expanded configuration to bridge the aperture. The stent thereby occludes the defective region from the inside of the vertebral disc and prevents the migration of nucleus pulposus therethrough, while also providing a scaffold for tissue growth.

Claims (21)

1. A method for treating an aperture in the annulus fibrosus of an intervertebral disc comprising:

providing a repair system comprising:

at least one first elongate member having a first major axis and a receptacle;

at least one second flexible elongate member having a second major axis, wherein said at least one second flexible elongate member is connectively received within said receptacle of said at least first elongate member; and

at least one bone anchor; and

introducing the at least one bone anchor into a vertebral body adjacent to the annulus fibrosus;

introducing the at least one first elongate member at least partially into intervertebral disc tissue surrounding the aperture;

introducing the at least one second flexible elongate member through at least a portion of the annulus fibrosus, including introducing portions of the at least one second flexible elongate member into or through the annulus fibrosus at locations on opposite sides of the aperture;

operatively coupling the at least one second flexible elongate member to the at least one bone anchor; and

applying tension to the at least one second flexible elongate member against the at least one bone anchor so as to reapproximate the aperture by pulling together, wholly or partially, the annular tissue surrounding the aperture.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the repair system comprises a biocompatible, bioabsorbable or biodegradable material.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first elongate member further comprises a barb.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second flexible elongate member comprises a suture.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the suture has a width greater than its height.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of tying the second elongate member in a knot.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the knot is formed prior to the introduction of the system.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising the step of tightening the knot.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the receptacle means is an orifice.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the receptacle means is a slot.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of rotating the first elongate member after introduction into the intervertebral disc and prior to pulling the annular tissue together.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first elongate member further comprises a patch, membrane, stent, scaffold or barrier.
