Abstract

A continuously variable transmission (CVT) having a main shaft configured to support and position various components of the CVT. Shift cam discs cooperate with ball-leg assemblies to shift the transmission ration of the CVT. Load cam discs, a torsion disc, rolling elements, and a hub cap shell are configured to generate axial force, transmit torque, and manage reaction forces. In one embodiment, a splined input shaft and a torsion disc having a splined bore cooperate to input torque into the variator of the CVT. Among other things, various ball axles, axle-ball combinations, and reaction force grounding configurations are disclosed. In one embodiment, a CVT having axial force generation means at both the input and output elements is disclosed.

Claims (27)

1. A cage for facilitating the support and guidance of a traction roller assembly in a continuously variable transmission, the cage comprising:

a first cage disc comprising a first plurality of angularly spaced apart radial grooves, the first plurality of radial grooves configured to receive a roller axle of the traction roller assembly, the first plurality of radial grooves extending perpendicularly from a longitudinal axis; and

a second cage disc comprising a second plurality of angularly spaced apart radial grooves, the second plurality of radial grooves configured to receive the roller axle, the second plurality of radial grooves extending perpendicularly from the longitudinal axis, wherein the first and second cage discs are positioned such that the first plurality of radial grooves is angularly offset relative to the second plurality of radial grooves, wherein the first and second cage discs are adapted to be mounted coaxially with a longitudinal axis of the continuously variable transmission, and wherein the first cage disc and the second cage disc each comprise a bore adapted to engage a main shaft of the continuously variable transmission.

2. The cage of claim 1 , wherein the first and second cage discs comprise a plurality of cutouts.

3. The cage of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of spacers configured to be positioned between the first cage disc and the second cage disc, wherein the spacers rigidly couple the first cage disc to the second cage disc.

4. The cage of claim 3 , wherein the first cage disc and the second cage disc each comprises a substantially circular outer periphery.

5. The cage of claim 1 , wherein the first and second cage discs each comprises a plurality of concave surfaces formed in between the grooves.

6. A cage for facilitating the support and guidance of a traction roller assembly in a continuously variable transmission, the cage comprising:

a first plurality of radial grooves on an interior surface of the cage, wherein the first plurality of radial grooves are spaced apart angularly about a longitudinal axis, the first plurality of radial grooves extend perpendicularly from the longitudinal axis, and the first plurality of radial grooves are configured to receive a roller axle of the traction roller assembly;

a second plurality of radial grooves on an interior surface of the cage, wherein the second plurality of radial grooves are spaced apart angularly about the longitudinal axis, the second plurality of radial grooves extend perpendicularly from the longitudinal axis, and the second plurality of radial grooves are configured to receive the roller axle; and

a plurality of spacers adapted to be positioned between the first and second plurality of radial grooves, wherein the first plurality of radial grooves is spaced axially apart from the second plurality of grooves, and wherein the first plurality of radial grooves is offset angularly relative to the second plurality of grooves.

7. The cage of claim 6 , further comprising a plurality of concave surfaces located between each of the grooves of the first plurality of grooves and between each of the grooves of the second plurality of grooves.

8. The cage of claim 6 , further comprising a central bore adapted to facilitate the mounting of the cage about the longitudinal axis.

9. The cage of claim 6 , wherein the first plurality of grooves and the second plurality of grooves are formed, respectively, on a first cage disc and a second cage disc.

10. The cage of claim 9 , wherein the first cage disc and the second cage disc each comprises a generally circular outer periphery.

11. The cage of claim 6 , wherein the plurality of spacers rigidly couple the first plurality of radial grooves to the second plurality of radial grooves.

12. A cage for facilitating the support and guidance of a traction roller assembly in a continuously variable transmission, the cage comprising:

a first cage disc comprising a first plurality of angularly spaced apart radial grooves extending perpendicularly from a longitudinal axis;

a second cage disc comprising a second plurality of angularly spaced apart radial grooves extending perpendicularly from the longitudinal axis; and

a plurality of spacers configured to be positioned between the first cage disc and the second cage disc, wherein the spacers rigidly couple the first cage disc to the second cage disc, wherein the first and second cage discs are positioned such that the first plurality of radial grooves is angularly offset relative to the second plurality of radial grooves, and wherein the first and second cage discs each comprise a plurality of concave surfaces formed in between the radial grooves.

13. The cage of claim 12 , wherein the first and second cage discs are adapted to be mounted coaxially with a longitudinal axis of the continuously variable transmission.

14. A cage for facilitating the support and guidance of a traction roller assembly in a continuously variable transmission, the cage comprising:

a first plurality of radial grooves on an interior surface of the cage, wherein the first plurality of radial grooves are spaced apart angularly about a longitudinal axis, and the first plurality of radial grooves extend perpendicularly from the longitudinal axis;

a second plurality of radial grooves on an interior surface of the cage, wherein the second plurality of radial grooves are spaced apart angularly about the longitudinal axis, and the second plurality of radial grooves extend perpendicularly from the longitudinal axis;

a plurality of concave surfaces located between each of the grooves of the first plurality of grooves and between each of the grooves of the second plurality of grooves; and

a plurality of spacers adapted to be positioned between the first and second plurality of radial grooves, wherein the first plurality of radial grooves is spaced axially apart from the second plurality of grooves, and wherein the first plurality of radial grooves is offset angularly relative to the second plurality of grooves.

15. The cage of claim 14 , wherein the plurality of spacers rigidly couple the first plurality of radial grooves to the second plurality of radial grooves.
