Abstract

Disclosed is a method for driving a plasma display panel in which a plurality of first electrodes and second electrodes are arranged parallel to each other, a plurality of third electrodes are arranged to cross the first and second electrodes, and discharge cells defined with areas in which the electrodes cross mutually are arranged in the form of a matrix. According to the driving method, a reset period is a period during which the distribution of wall charges in the plurality of discharge cells is uniformed. An addressing period is a period during which wall charges are produced in the discharge cells according to display data. A sustain discharge period is a period during which sustain discharge is induced in the discharge cells in which wall charges are produced during the addressing period. The driving method in accordance with the present invention comprises a step of applying a first pulse in which an applied voltage varies with time so as to induce first discharge in the lines defined by the first and second electrodes, and a step of applying a second pulse in which an applied voltage varies with time so as to induce second discharge as erase discharge in the lines defined by the first and second electrodes. These steps are carried out during the reset period.

Claims (28)

A method for driving a plasma display panel in which a plurality of first and second electrodes are arranged adjacently each other, a plurality of third electrodes are arranged to cross the first and second electrodes, the plasma display panel having a reset period, an address period, and a sustain discharged period,

the method comprising:

in said reset period, applying to the second electrodes a first waveform voltage having a positive polarity, whose applied potential increases with time, and

thereafter, applying to the second electrodes a second waveform voltage, whose applied potential decreases with time,

wherein said first waveform voltage has a potential variation per unit time at a first timing which is larger than a potential variation per unit time at a second timing later than the first timing.

2. A method for driving a plasma display panel according to the claim 1 , further comprising:

in said reset period, applying a negative polarity pulse to said first electrodes prior to the application of the first waveform voltage to the second electrodes.

3. A method for driving a plasma display panel according to the claim 1 , wherein:

said second waveform voltage is applied after falling the first waveform voltage to a predetermined potential, after the application of the first waveform voltage.

4. A method for driving a plasma display panel according to the claim 3 , wherein:

said predetermined potential is higher than an electrode potential at initiating the application of the first waveform voltage, and lower than an electrode potential at reaching of the first waveform voltage.

5. A method for driving a plasma display panel according to the claim 3 , wherein:

said predetermined potential is equal to a potential at initiating the application of the first waveform voltage.

6. A method for driving a plasma display panel according to the claim 3 , wherein:

an electrode potential reached by applying said second waveform voltage is higher than a select potential which is a potential of scan pulse applied to the second electrodes during the address period, and lower than a non-select potential of the second electrodes during the address period.

7. A method for driving a plasma display panel in which a plurality of first and second electrodes are arranged adjacently each other, a plurality of third electrodes are arranged to cross the first and second electrodes, the plasma display panel having a reset period, an address period, and a sustain discharge period, the method comprising:

in said reset period, applying to the second electrodes a first waveform voltage having a positive polarity, whose applied potential increases with time, and applying to the third electrodes a first constant voltage, and thereafter, applying to the second electrodes a second waveform voltage, whose applied potential decreases with time, and applying to the third electrodes a second constant voltage,

wherein said first waveform voltage has a potential variation per unit time at a first timing which is larger than a potential variation per unit time at a second timing later than the first timing.

8. A method for driving a plasma display panel according to the claim 7 ,

wherein said first waveform voltage has a potential variation per unit time at a third timing which is larger than a potential variation per unit time at a fourth timing later than the third timing.

9. A method for driving a plasma display panel according to the claim 7 , wherein

said second waveform voltage is applied after falling the first waveform voltage to a predetermined potential, after the application of the first waveform voltage.

10. A method for driving a plasma display panel according to the claim 9 , wherein

said predetermined potential is higher than an electrode potential at initiating the application of the first waveform voltage, and lower than an electrode potential at reaching of the first waveform voltage.

11. A method for driving a plasma display panel according to the claim 9 , wherein

said predetermined potential is equal to a potential at initiating the application of the first waveform voltage.

12. A method for driving a plasma display panel according to the claim 9 , wherein
