Abstract

Super-oxidized water based on hypochlorous acid, such as is obtained by the electrochemical treatment of a saline solution, may be used in the treatment of leg ulcers or other open wounds. Preferably, the pH of the super-oxidized water is in a range of 4 to 7, and the water has a redox potential of >950 mV. Medicaments based on the super-oxidized water may be in liquid or gel form. The super-oxidized water is able to control the microbial population within the wound and at the same time permit cell proliferation.

Claims (19)

. A method for cleansing an open wound selected from an ulcer or bum in a human or animal body, comprising: administering to the open wound a solution of oxidized water comprising hypochlorous acid and hypochlorite, the solution having a pH of from 4 to 7 and an available free chlorine concentration of less than 144 mg/l, wherein the solution is obtained by electrochemical treatment of a saline solution, and wherein the method is non-irritating,

. The method of claim 1 , wherein the open wound is a leg ulcer.

. The method of claim 1 , wherein the open wound is a chronic ulcer.

. The method of claim 1 , wherein the pH is about 6.2.

. The method of claim 1 , wherein the solution is applied to the wound as a wash.

. The method of claim 4 , wherein the solution has an available free chlorine concentration of from 6 to 16 mg/l.

. The method of claim 1 , wherein the open wound is infected.

. The method of claim 6 , wherein the infection is drug resistant.

. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method is not painful, and permits wound healing.

. An electrolyzed saline solution comprising hypochlorous acid and hypochlorite, wherein the solution has a pH of from 4 to 7 and an available free chlorine content of less than 144 mg/l.

. An electrolyzed saline solution of claim 10 , wherein the solution has a pH of about 6.2 and an available free chlorine content of from 6-16 mg/l.

. A method of treating a skin ulcer in a patient comprising administering an oxidative reductive potential (ORP) water solution to the patient in an amount effective to treat the skin ulcer, wherein the solution has a pH of about 4 to about 7, wherein the solution is stable for at least about 1 week.

. The method of claim 12 , wherein the solution is stable for at least about two months.

. The method of claim 12 , wherein the solution comprises anode water and cathode water.

. The method of 12, wherein the solution comprises hypochlorous acid, hypochlorite ions, or a combination thereof.

. The method of claim 12 , wherein the amount of free chlorine species is from about 6 to about 400 ppm.

. The method of claim 12 , wherein the free chlorine species is hypochlorous acid present in an amount of from about 6 to about 16 ppm.

. The method of 12, wherein the solution is administered to the patient by washing or irrigating the skin ulcer with the solution.

. The method of claim 12 , wherein the solution is administered to the patient by soaking the skin ulcer with the solution.
