Abstract

Electroluminescent devices, and methods of making and using such devices, are disclosed. The electroluminescent devices include a patterned layer on a solvent-susceptible layer. The electroluminescent devices may be used, for example, as full color display devices.

Claims (36)

1. An electroluminescent device comprising:

a solvent-susceptible layer;

a patterned layer on the solvent-susceptible layer, wherein the patterned layer comprises a first emitter and a non-volatile polymer, oligomer, or dendrimer component that is the same as or different than the first emitter; and

a non-patterned layer comprising a second emitter, disposed on the patterned layer and the solvent-susceptible layer.

2. The device of claim 1 wherein the patterned layer further comprises a third emitter.

3. The device of claim 1 further comprising a second patterned layer disposed on the solvent-susceptible layer, wherein the second patterned layer comprises a third emitter.

4. The device of claim 1 wherein the solvent-susceptible layer is a hole transport layer, a hole injection layer, an electron blocking layer, a dielectric layer, a passivation layer, or a combination thereof.

5. The device of claim 1 wherein the non-patterned layer is an undoped electron transport layer, a doped electron transport layer, an undoped hole blocking layer, a doped hole blocking layer, an undoped electron injecting layer, a doped electron injecting layer, or a combination thereof.

6. The device of claim 1 further comprising an anode attached to the solvent-susceptible layer.

7. The device of claim 6 further comprising a cathode attached to the non-patterned layer.

8. The device of claim 7 wherein the cathode is opaque, the anode is transparent, and the device is operable to emit light through the transparent anode.

9. The device of claim 7 wherein the cathode is transparent, the anode is opaque, and the device is operable to emit light through the transparent cathode.

10. The device of claim 7 wherein the cathode is transparent, the device further comprises an opaque substrate attached to the anode, and the device is operable to emit light through the transparent cathode.

11. The device of claim 7 wherein the cathode is transparent, the anode is transparent, and the device is operable to emit light through the transparent cathode and the transparent anode.

12. A method of generating light comprising:

providing an electroluminescent device according to claim 7 ; and

providing a signal to the anode and the cathode, wherein the signal is operable to address an emitter, following which the emitter emits light.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein the device is an active or passive addressed device.

14. The method of claim 12 wherein the device is a full color display or tunable lighting device.

15. The device of claim 6 further comprising a hole injection layer, an electron blocking layer, or a combination thereof disposed between the anode and the solvent-susceptible layer.

16. The device of claim 1 wherein the non-patterned layer is solvent-susceptible.

17. An electroluminescent device comprising:

a substrate;

a patterned layer on the substrate, wherein the patterned layer comprises a first emitter and a non-volatile polymer, oligomer, or dendrimer component that is the same as or different than the first emitter; and

a non-patterned layer comprising a second emitter, disposed on the patterned layer and the substrate,

wherein the substrate has a dimension of at least 1 meter×1 meter.

18. The device of claim 17 wherein the substrate is comprised of glass.

19. An electroluminescent device comprising:

a solvent-susceptible layer;

a patterned layer on the solvent-susceptible layer, wherein the patterned layer comprises a first emitter and a polymer, an oligomer, or a dendrimer that is the same as or different than the first emitter; and

a non-patterned layer comprising a second emitter, disposed on the patterned layer and the solvent-susceptible layer.

20. An electroluminescent device comprising:

a substrate;

a patterned layer on the substrate, wherein the patterned layer comprises a first emitter and a polymer, an oligomer, or a dendrimer that is the same as or different than the first emitter; and

a non-patterned layer comprising a second emitter, disposed on the patterned layer and the substrate,

wherein the substrate has a dimension of at least 1 meter×1 meter.
