1. A composition formulated for ophthalmic use, comprising:

(a) greater than 10% up to, but not including, 20% w/w tea tree oil; and

(b) an ophthalmically-acceptable base comprising a mucoadhesive polymer and a nonionic surfactant;

wherein the ophthalmically-acceptable base does not comprise petroleum or a derivative thereof, or alcohol.

2. The composition of claim 1 , comprising greater than 10% up to about 15% w/w tea tree oil.

3. The composition of claim 1 , comprising about 15% up to, but not including, 20% tea tree oil.

4. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition is effective for the treatment of ocular Demodex.

5. A method for treating ocular Demodex infestation or Demodex -induced blepharitis in a subject in need thereof comprising: applying the ophthalmic composition of claim 1 to the eyelid area of said subject; massaging the composition onto the eyelid margin and eyelash root areas; and repeating the applying and massaging.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the subject shows improvement in ocular itching, Demodex count, foreign body sensation, mal-directed lashes, lash falling, dry eye, redness, light-sensitivity, or any combination thereof.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the subject is refractory to an anti-inflammatory, a conventional anti-microbial antibiotic, or an anti-allergy therapy for ocular Demodex infestation or Demodex -induced blepharitis.

8. The method of claim 5 , further comprising scrubbing the eyelid margin and eyelash root areas with a solution or suspension comprising tea tree oil before or after applying the ophthalmic composition.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the solution or suspension is a tea tree oil shampoo.

10. A composition formulated for ophthalmic use, comprising:

(a) about 0.2% up to, and including, 10% w/w tea tree oil; and

(b) an ophthalmically-acceptable base comprising a mucoadhesive polymer and a nonionic surfactant;

wherein the ophthalmically-acceptable base does not comprise (a) petroleum or a derivative thereof, (b) polyacrylate, or (c) alcohol.

11. The composition of claim 10 , comprising about 5% w/w tea tree oil.

12. The composition of claim 10 , comprising about 4% to about 10% w/w tea tree oil.

13. The composition of claim 10 , wherein the composition is effective for the treatment of ocular Demodex.

14. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the mucoadhesive polymer comprises carbomer.

15. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the nonionic surfactant comprises a polysorbate.

16. The composition of claim 10 , wherein the mucoadhesive polymer comprises carbomer.

17. The composition of claim 10 , wherein the nonionic surfactant comprises a polysorbate.

18. A method for treating ocular Demodex infestation or Demodex -induced blepharitis in a subject in need thereof comprising: applying the ophthalmic composition of claim 10 to the eyelid area of said subject; massaging the composition onto the eyelid margin and eyelash root areas; and repeating the applying and massaging.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the ophthalmic composition comprises about 5% w/w tea tree oil.

20. The method of claim 18 , wherein the subject shows improvement in ocular itching, Demodex count, foreign body sensation, mal-directed lashes, lash falling, dry eye, redness, light-sensitivity, or any combination thereof.

21. The method of claim 18 , where the subject is refractory to an anti-inflammatory, a conventional anti-microbial antibiotic, or an anti-allergy therapy for ocular Demodex infestation or Demodex -induced blepharitis.

22. The method of claim 18 , further comprising scrubbing the eyelid margin and eyelash root area with a solution or suspension comprising tea tree oil before or after applying the ophthalmic composition.

23. The method of claim 22 , wherein the solution or suspension is a tea tree oil shampoo.
