Abstract

A motion transmitting cable assembly includes a cable having a conduit and a core longitudinally movable within the conduit, a core attachment secured to an end of the core, and a conduit abutment fitting secured to an end of the conduit. The core attachment is molded of plastic and is over-molded onto the end of the core. The core is preferably provided with both an upset and a wire wrap within the core attachment. The core attachment includes a terminal and a rod extending from the terminal and is molded as a unitary component. A guide tube extends from the conduit abutment fitting and slidably receives the rod therein. The core meets the core attachment within the guide tube and preferably extends within the rod for the entire length of the rod and a portion of the terminal.

Claims (48)

1. A motion transmitting cable assembly comprising, in combination:

a cable having a conduit and a core longitudinally movable within the conduit;

a core attachment secured to an end of the core;

wherein the core attachment includes a terminal and a rod molded as a unitary component and the core extends within the rod for at least a portion of the length of the rod;

wherein the terminal includes an annular-shaped head adapted to receive a connecting pin;

wherein the end of the core is provided with a wrap about the core within the core attachment to improve a pull-out load of the core from the core attachment and to stiffen the rod with regard to side loading;

wherein the wrap forms a gap; and

wherein the core attachment is molded of plastic and is over-molded onto the end of the core and over the wrap so that plastic of the rod extends into the gap to form an interlock in the axial direction between the core attachment and the core and so that the wrap is fully contained within and sealed by the plastic core attachment.

2. The cable assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the core extends within the rod for at least the entire length of the rod.

3. The cable assembly according to claim 2 , wherein the core extends within the rod for the entire length of the rod and a portion of the terminal.

4. The cable assembly according to claim 1 , further comprising a conduit abutment fitting and a guide tube extending from the conduit abutment fitting and slidably receiving the rod therein, wherein an end of the core attachment is located within the guide tube and the core extends into the guide tube to the core attachment, and wherein at least a portion of the guide tube is adapted to be laterally attached over the core attachment and the core at the juncture of the core attachment and the core.

5. The cable assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the wrap comprises wire.

6. The cable assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the gap is a helical gap.

7. The cable assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the core comprises nonmetallic material.

8. The cable assembly according to claim 7 , wherein the conduit comprises only nonmetallic materials.

9. The cable assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the wrap is a flat metal wire helically wound around the core.

10. A motion transmitting cable assembly comprising, in combination:

a cable having a conduit and a core longitudinally movable within the conduit;

a core attachment secured to an end of the core;

a conduit abutment fitting secured to an end of the conduit;

wherein the core attachment includes a terminal and a rod molded as a unitary component and the core extends within the rod for at least a portion of the length of the rod;

wherein the terminal includes an annular-shaped head adapted to receive a connecting pin;

wherein the end of the core is provided with a wrap about the core within the rod to improve a pull-out load of the core from the core attachment and to stiffen the rod with regard to side loading;

wherein the wrap forms a gap;

wherein the core attachment is molded of plastic and is over-molded onto the end of the core and over the wrap so that plastic of the rod extends into the cap to form an interlock in the axial direction between the core attachment and the core and so that the wrap is fully contained within and sealed by the plastic core attachment;

a guide tube extending from the conduit abutment fitting and slidably receiving the rod therein;

wherein an end of the core attachment is located within the guide tube and the core extends into the guide tube to the core attachment; and

wherein at least a portion of the guide tube is laterally attached over the core attachment and the core at a juncture of the core attachment and the core.

11. The cable assembly according to claim 10 , wherein the core attachment further includes a terminal and is molded as a unitary component.

12. The cable assembly according to claim 10 , wherein the core extends within the rod for at least the entire length of the rod.

13. The cable assembly according to claim 10 , wherein the wrap comprises wire.

14. The cable assembly according to claim 10 , wherein the gap is a helical gap.

15. The cable assembly according to claim 10 , wherein the core comprises nonmetallic material.

16. The cable assembly according to claim 15 , wherein the conduit comprises only nonmetallic materials.

17. The cable assembly according to claim 10 , wherein the wrap is a flat metal wire helically wound around the core.

18. A push-pull motion transmitting cable assembly for a motor vehicle, said cable assembly comprising, in combination:

a cable having a conduit and a core longitudinally movable within the conduit;

a core attachment secured to an end of the core;

wherein the core attachment includes a terminal and a rod molded as a unitary component and the core extends within the rod for at least a portion of the length of the rod;

wherein the terminal includes an annular-shaped head adapted to receive a connecting pin;

wherein the end of the core is provided with a wrap within the core attachment to improve a pull-out load of the core from the core attachment and to stiffen the core attachment with regard to side loading;

wherein the wrap forms a gap and plastic of the core attachment extends into the gap to form an interlock in the axial direction between the core attachment and the core;

wherein the wrap is fully contained within and sealed by the plastic core attachment; and

wherein the conduit comprises only nonmetallic materials.

19. The cable assembly according to claim 18 , wherein the core comprises only nonmetallic material.

20. The cable assembly according to claim 19 , wherein the core attachment is molded of plastic and is over-molded onto the end of the core.

21. The cable assembly according to claim 18 , wherein the gap is a helical gap.

22. The cable assembly according to claim 18 , wherein the wrap is a flat metal wire helically wound around the core.
