Abstract

A system for substantially continuously providing a solid material, for example pulverized coal, to a pressurized container. The system provides the solid material to a first container of a first pressure elevated above an initial pressure of the solid material. Generally, a screw conveyor augmented with a jet port is used to move the material where the jet port provides a gas to provide a make-up volume of the solid material. The system also provides the material to a second high pressure container after the material has been formed into a slurry. Therefore, the solid material may be substantially continuously provided in a system to a high pressure container.

Claims (23)

1. A jet feeder to transport a pulverized material from a low pressure to a high pressure environment, the jet feeder comprising:

a housing to contain the material while it is within the jet feeder, the housing including an inlet port to receive the pulverized material and an outlet port to allow the material to exit said housing;

a screw disposed within said housing to advance the material from said inlet port to said outlet port, and defining a jet port;

a sleeve substantially surrounding a length of said screw, said sleeve including an interior and an exterior, said interior defining a helical groove that engages said screw;

wherein said jet port assists in moving the material to said outlet port; and

wherein a pressure at said outlet port is higher than a pressure at said inlet port.

2. The jet feeder of claim 1 , wherein said screw defines an axial bore, and said screw further defines a radial bore, wherein said radial bore operably interconnects said axial bore and said jet port, such that a gas provided to said axial bore may be propelled out of said jet port.

3. The jet feeder of claim 1 , wherein said screw includes a thread that defines a thread plane, and wherein said jet port includes a central axis at an angle of about 5° to about 20° to said thread plane.

4. The jet feeder of claim 1 , wherein a volume of gas is provided to said jet port such that said volume of gas exits said jet port at a super-sonic velocity.

5. The jet feeder of claim 1 , wherein the screw and the sleeve are axially fixed.

6. The jet feeder of claim 1 , wherein said housing defines a sealed space at one end of said screw, and the sealed space is in communication with a bore within said screw.

7. The jet feeder of claim 6 , further comprising a seal, located between said housing and said screw, and said seal defines a boundary of said sealed space.

8. The jet feeder of claim 1 , further comprising first and second sleeve bearings within said housing and upon which the sleeve is mounted for rotation.

9. The jet feeder of claim 1 , further comprising a seal between said sleeve and said housing at said outlet port.

10. A jet feeder to transport a pulverized material from a low pressure to a high pressure environment, the jet feeder comprising:

a housing to contain the material while it is within the jet feeder, the housing including an inlet port to receive the pulverized material and an outlet port to allow the material to exit said housing;

a screw disposed within said housing to advance the material from said inlet port to said outlet port, and defining a jet port;

a sleeve substantially surrounding a length of said screw, said sleeve including an interior and an exterior, said interior defining a helical groove that engages said screw;

first and second sleeve bearings within said housing and upon which the sleeve is mounted for rotation;

a seal between said sleeve and said housing at said outlet port;

wherein said jet port assists in moving the material to said outlet port; and

wherein a pressure at said outlet port is higher than a pressure at said inlet port.

11. The jet feeder of claim 10 , wherein said screw is supported on first and second housing bearings located at respective ends of said screw.
