Abstract

Ultrasonic end stops and methods of making ultrasonic end stops are provided. The present invention relates to plastic reclosable fasteners with sliders for opening and closing the reclosable fasteners on plastic bags and the like and particularly to the use of protruding end stop structures on reclosable fasteners to prevent travel of sliders past the fastener ends. The end stop structures include at least one of high density polyethylene, medium density polyethylene, polypropylene, a cyclic olefin copolymer, a high density material, or a high modulus material and may optionally include low density polyethylene or linear low density polyethylene.

Claims (29)

1. A method for forming end stops on a polymeric bag, the polymeric bag including first and second opposing body panels fixedly connected to each other along a pair of sides and a bottom bridging the pair of sides, a reclosable fastener extending along a mouth formed opposite the bottom, the fastener including a pair of interlocking flexible plastic tracks, the plastic tracks including a male track including a male profile and a female track including a female profile; a slider slidably mounted to the fastener for movement between a closed position and an open position, the method comprising the steps of:

ultrasonically smashing opposite ends of the male and female profiles comprising at least one of high density polyethylene, medium density polyethylene, polypropylene, a cyclic olefin copolymer, a high density material, or a high modulus material at a seal area at opposite ends of the bag to reduce a thickness of a portion of at least one of the male and female profiles to form first and second end stops located at opposite ends of the fastener comprising at least one of high density polyethylene, medium density polyethylene, polypropylene, a cyclic olefin copolymer, a high density material, or a high modulus material, a portion of the first and second end stops protrudes upwardly beyond an upper edge of the tracks an adequate distance from at least a portion of the fastener to prevent the slider from going past respective ends of the fastener, the first and second end stops each having a thickness less than a thickness of the fastener.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the process of ultrasonically smashing is accomplished with an anvil-horn assembly.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the anvil-horn assembly includes a pair of anvil cavities.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first and second end stops further comprise low density polyethylene or linear low density polyethylene.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the first and second end stops comprise from about 99 wt. % to about 1 wt. % low density polyethylene or linear low density polyethylene.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first and second end stops further comprise ultra low density polyethylene, very low density polyethylene, elastomers, plastomers, metallocene-catalyzed linear low density polyethylene, or combinations thereof.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first and second end stops comprise from about 1 wt. % to about 99 wt. % high density polyethylene, medium density polyethylene, polypropylene, a cyclic olefin copolymer, a high density material, or a high modulus material.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first and second end stops comprise from about 25 wt. % to about 75 wt. % high density polyethylene, medium density polyethylene, polypropylene, a cyclic olefin copolymer, a high density material, or a high modulus material.

9. A method for forming end stops on a polymeric bag comprising:

forming the polymeric bag having first and second opposing body panels joined along a pair of sides and a bottom bridging the pair of sides;

providing a reclosable fastener extending along a mouth formed opposite the bottom, the fastener including a pair of interlocking flexible plastic tracks with a male track having a male profile and a female track having a female profile; and

ultrasonically smashing at least one end of the male profile or the female profile to reduce a thickness of a portion of at least one of the male profile or the female profile to form at least one end stop, a portion of the at least one end stop protruding upwardly beyond an upper edge of the tracks, the at least one end stop having a thickness less than a thickness of the fastener.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein ultrasonically smashing is accomplished with an anvil-horn assembly.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the anvil-horn assembly includes a pair of anvil cavities.

12. The method of claim 9 , further comprising slidably mounting a slider to the fastener.

13. The method of claim 9 , further comprising providing at least one of the male track or the female track with an integrally formed fin.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein ultrasonically smashing is performed on a lower portion of at least one of the male profile or the female profile.

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein ultrasonically smashing is performed on an upper portion of at least one of the male profile or the female profile.

16. The method of claim 9 , wherein ultrasonically smashing is performed on an upper and a lower portion of at least one of the male profile or the female profile.

17. The method of claim 9 , wherein a lower portion of the male and female profiles remains unaltered.

18. The method of claim 9 , wherein the opposing body panels are joined by a seal extending along the sides and a seal extending along the bottom.

19. The method of claim 9 , wherein the opposing body panels are joined by a seal extending along the sides and a fold extending along the bottom.

20. The method of claim 9 , wherein the opposing body panels are joined by a fold extending along a side, a seal extending along an opposite side, and a seal extending along the bottom.

21. The method of claim 9 , wherein the first and second end stops further comprise low density polyethylene or linear low density polyethylene.

22. The method of claim 9 , wherein the first and second end stops further comprise ultra low density polyethylene, very low density polyethylene, elastomers, plastomers, metallocene-catalyzed linear low density polyethylene, or combinations thereof.

23. The method of claim 22 , wherein the first and second end stops comprise from about 99 wt. % to about 1 wt. % low density polyethylene or linear low density polyethylene.

24. The method of claim 9 , wherein the first and second end stops comprise from about 1 wt. % to about 99 wt. % high density polyethylene, medium density polyethylene, polypropylene, a cyclic olefin copolymer, a high density material, or a high modulus material.

25. The method of claim 9 , wherein the first and second end stops comprise from about 25 wt. % to about 75 wt. % high density polyethylene, medium density polyethylene, polypropylene, a cyclic olefin copolymer, a high density material, or a high modulus material.
