Abstract

An electrolyte and method of producing the same. In one embodiment, the electrolyte includes water, ascorbic acid, a phosphorous donor, ammonium perchlorate, ferrous perchlorate, cobalt perchlorate, and a buffering agent.

Claims (54)

1. An electrolyte, comprising:

water;

ascorbic acid;

a buffering agent including at least one of sarcosine and phenylmalonic acid;

a phosphorous donor;

ammonium perchlorate;

ferrous perchlorate; and

cobalt perchlorate, wherein said electrolyte is configured to electroplate a magnetic alloy including iron, cobalt and phosphorous.

2. The electrolyte as recited in claim 1 wherein said magnetic alloy sustains a magnetic saturation flux density of about 1.5 to 1.7 tesla.

3. The electrolyte as recited in claim 1 wherein said buffering agent further includes one of malonic acid, methanesulfonylacetic acid and phenylsulfonylacetic acid.

4. The electrolyte as recited in claim 1 further comprising about 0.1 molar of said buffering agent.

5. The electrolyte as recited in claim 1 comprising about 24 liters of said water to produce about a 30 liter solution of said electrolyte.

6. The electrolyte as recited in claim 1 comprising about 0.01 molar of said ascorbic acid.

7. The electrolyte as recited in claim 1 wherein said phosphorous donor is sodium hypophosphite.

8. The electrolyte as recited in claim 1 wherein said phosphorous donor is about 0.08 molar of sodium hypophosphite.

9. The electrolyte as recited in claim 1 comprising about 0.50 molar of said ammonium perchlorate.

10. The electrolyte as recited in claim 1 comprising about 0.65 molar of said ferrous perchlorate.

11. The electrolyte as recited in claim 1 comprising about 0.006 molar of said cobalt perchlorate.

12. The electrolyte as recited in claim 1 further comprising an inert gas bubbled therethrough.

13. The electrolyte as recited in claim 1 further comprising nitrogen bubbled therethrough.

14. The electrolyte as recited in claim 1 further comprising ammonium bicarbonate.

15. The electrolyte as recited in claim 1 further comprising perchloric acid configured to lower a pH level of said electrolyte.

16. The electrolyte as recited in claim 1 further comprising about 12 percent perchloric acid.

17. The electrolyte as recited in claim 1 wherein a pH level of said electrolyte is less than about three.

18. The electrolyte as recited in claim 1 wherein a content of said cobalt is in a range of 1.8 to 4.5 atomic percent, a content of phosphorus is in a range of 20.1 to 30 atomic percent, and a content of said iron is substantially a remaining proportion of said magnetic alloy.

19. The electrolyte as recited in claim 1 further comprising one of sulfur, vanadium, tungsten or copper.

20. The electrolyte as recited in claim 1 further comprising less than about 10 millimolar of one of sulfur, vanadium, tungsten or copper.

21. A method of producing an electrolyte, comprising:

providing water;

adding ascorbic acid to said water;

adding a buffering agent to said water including at least one of sarcosine and phenylmalonic acid;

adding a phosphorous donor to said water;

adding ammonium perchlorate to said water;

adding ferrous perchlorate to said water; and

adding cobalt perchlorate to said water, wherein said electrolyte is configured to electroplate a magnetic alloy including iron, cobalt and phosphorous.

22. The method as recited in claim 21 wherein said magnetic alloy sustains a magnetic saturation flux density of about 1.5 to 1.7 tesla.

23. The method as recited in claim 21 wherein said buffering agent further includes one of malonic acid, methanesulfonylacetic acid and phenylsulfonylacetic acid.

24. The method as recited in claim 21 further comprising adding about 0.1 molar of said buffering agent to said water.

25. The method as recited in claim 21 comprising about 24 liters of said water to produce about a 30 liter solution of said electrolyte.

26. The method as recited in claim 21 comprising about 0.01 molar of said ascorbic acid.

27. The method as recited in claim 21 wherein said phosphorous donor is sodium hypophosphite.

28. The method as recited in claim 21 wherein said phosphorous donor is about 0.08 molar of sodium hypophosphite.

29. The method as recited in claim 21 comprising about 0.50 molar of said ammonium perchlorate.

30. The method as recited in claim 21 comprising about 0.65 molar of said ferrous perchlorate.

31. The method as recited in claim 21 comprising about 0.006 molar of said cobalt perchlorate.

32. The method as recited in claim 21 further comprising bubbling an inert gas through said water.

33. The method as recited in claim 21 further comprising bubbling nitrogen through said water.

34. The method as recited in claim 21 further comprising adding ammonium bicarbonate to said water.

35. The method as recited in claim 21 further comprising adding perchloric acid to said water to lower a pH level of said electrolyte.

36. The method as recited in claim 21 further comprising adding about 12 percent perchloric acid to said water.

37. The method as recited in claim 21 wherein a pH level of said electrolyte is less than about three.

38. The method as recited in claim 21 wherein a content of said cobalt is in a range of 1.8 to 4.5 atomic percent, a content of phosphorus is in a range of 20.1 to 30 atomic percent, and a content of said iron is substantially a remaining proportion of said magnetic alloy.
