Abstract

Medical procedure trays and related methods are provided to accommodate joining a first non-sterile medical device with a second sterile medical device and maintaining required sterilization of the second sterile medical device to perform an associated medical procedure. One example of such medical procedures includes biopsy of a bone and/or associated bone marrow using a non-sterile powered drive and a sterile biopsy needle or biopsy needle set. Medical procedure trays and related methods may also be provided for use during aspiration of bone marrow and/or stem cell transplant procedures. Each medical procedure tray may include a containment bag or sterile sleeve. A coupler assembly, one or more sharps protectors, a biopsy sample ejector and/or associated ejector funnel may also be included. Some medical procedure trays may allow engaging a non-sterile powered driver with one end of a coupler assembly and sealing the non-sterile powered driver in a sterile sleeve or containment bag without compromising sterility of other components in the medical procedure tray.

Claims (32)

1. A method to releasably engage a non-sterile powered driver with a sterile intraosseous device having a first end operable to penetrate a bone and associated bone marrow and to avoid contamination of the sterile intraosseous device prior to performing a medical procedure with the sterile intraosseous device comprising:

removing a cover from a sterile medical procedure tray containing a sterile coupler assembly having a first end and a second end, a sterile containment bag having a first opening engaged proximate the second end of the sterile coupler assembly and the sterile intraosseous device;

inserting one end of a drive shaft extending from the non-sterile powered driver through a fenestration in a drape covering the coupler assembly;

engaging the one end of the drive shaft with a respective connector receptacle disposed in the second end of the coupler assembly;

pulling the drape upwardly to move a second opening of the containment bag over the powered driver;

continuing to pull the drape upwardly until the powered driver is disposed within the containment bag;

closing the second opening of the containment bag with the powered driver disposed therein;

removing the powered driver and the coupler assembly as a single unit from the medical procedure tray;

removing the sterile intraosseous device from the medical procedure tray; and

inserting a second end of the intraosseous device into a respective connector receptacle disposed in the first end of the coupler assembly.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

inserting the first end of the intraosseous device at a selected target site to obtain a biopsy specimen;

disengaging the powered driver and the coupler assembly from the intraosseous device after the intraosseous device has been inserted to a desired depth in the associated bone marrow;

removing the intraosseous device from the bone marrow with the biopsy specimen disposed within a lumen of the intraosseous device;

inserting the first end of the intraosseous device into a first end of a funnel disposed in a respective holder in the medical procedure tray;

removing the funnel from the medical procedure tray while attached to the first end of the intraosseous device;

removing an ejector rod from the medical procedure tray and inserting the ejector rod into a second end of the funnel; and

pushing the ejector rod through the funnel and the lumen of the intraosseous device to eject the biopsy specimen from the second end of the intraosseous device.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the engaging the one end of the drive shaft with a respective connector receptacle disposed in the second end of the coupler assembly is performed by a non-sterile person; and

the pulling the drape upwardly to move a second opening of the containment bag over the powered driver and the closing the second opening of the containment bag with the powered driver disposed therein is performed by a sterile person.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

inserting the intraosseous device at a selected target site to aspirate bone marrow from a bone;

disengaging the powered driver and the coupler assembly from the intraosseous device after the intraosseous device has been inserted to a desired depth within the associated bone marrow;

connecting the second end of the intraosseous device with a bone marrow aspiration system;

aspirating a desired amount of bone marrow through a lumen in the intraosseous device;

disconnecting the bone marrow aspiration system from the second end of the intraosseous device;

engaging the powered driver and the coupler assembly with the second end of the intraosseous device;

inserting the intraosseous device to a second depth within the associated bone marrow;

disengaging the powered driver and the coupler assembly from the second end of the intraosseous device;

engaging the second end of the intraosseous device with the bone marrow aspiration system; and

aspirating a desired amount of bone marrow through the lumen of the intraosseous device.
