Abstract

A solid imaging apparatus is provided that includes a replaceable cartridge containing a source of build material and an extendable and retractable flexible transport film for transporting the build material layer-by-layer from the cartridge to the surface of a build in an image plane. An operator using the device needs merely to remove a spent cartridge and replace it with a fresh cartridge to continue solid imaging virtually uninterrupted. The apparatus also includes the capability of withdrawing and inserting an imager without the operator having to perform a separate alignment step. A brush attached to the transport film and forming part of the cartridge provides for intra-layer removal of excess uncured build material. If desired, the apparatus can produce a fully reacted build. A high intensity UV source cures the build between layers. An injection molded build pad is designed to hold a build in an inverted position for improving the build. The invention also provides for tilting the build elevator to reduce air entrainment and for releasing the build from the image plane.

Claims (19)

1. A method for reducing air entrainment in a build material transferred to a build object on a build platform in a solid imaging device, said method comprising the steps of:

a) tilting the build platform on approach to a build material surface on an image plane to establish an angle of a predetermined build on a build pad mounted on the build platform sufficient to reduce air entrainment in a build material;

b) extending the leading edge of a predetermined build into the build material less than one build-layer thickness;

c) extending the following edge of the predetermined build into the build material;

d) leveling the build platform with respect to the image plane; and

e) moving the build to one layer thickness in the build material; thereby reducing air entrainment in the build material.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the build-layer thickness is about 0.004 inches and the leading edge is extended into the build material by from 0.000 to 0.004 inches.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein said predetermined build is a theoretical three-dimensional object, predetermined to extend the full available build width of a build pad on a build platform.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the steps (a) through (e) are repeated, alternately establishing first and second leading edges.

5. A method for facilitating release of a build from an image plane comprising the steps of:

a) applying build material to a flexible transport surface;

b) extending the transport surface to a rigid solid image plane transparent to solid imaging radiation;

c) applying vacuum between the rigid plane and the transport surface to adhere the transport surface to the rigid plane;

d) contacting a layer of build material on the build material transport surface opposite the rigid surface with the build;

e) imaging the layer to solidify the layer;

f) tilting the build platform with respect to the image plane to lift one edge of the build off the transport surface, thereby facilitating release of the build;

g) lifting the build off the transport surface; and thereafter

h) releasing the transport surface from the rigid surface and retracting the transport surface.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein the steps (a) through (h) are repeated, alternately lifting first and second edges of the build off the transport surface.
