Abstract

Apparatus, and an associated method, for facilitating paging of an access terminal operable in a radio communication system. The access terminal detects a first page message that does not include an access sequence identifier. The access terminal responds to the first page message without waiting for detection of a second page message that includes an access sequence ID. The response to the first page message includes an access sequence ID retrieved from a shared pool of access sequence IDs stored at the access terminal.

Claims (14)

1. A method for responding to an access-terminal page, said method comprising:

receiving an access-terminal page message;

responding to the access-terminal page message using a first type of access sequence identifier if the access-terminal page message does not include an access sequence identifier, wherein responding using the first type of access sequence identifier comprises accessing an access-terminal pool of access sequence identifiers and randomly selecting an access-terminal-stored access sequence identifier therefrom as the first type of access sequence identifier; and

responding to the access-terminal page message using a second type of access sequence identifier selected based on the access sequence identifier included in the access-terminal page message if the access-terminal page message includes the access sequence identifier and an access sequence identifier field indicates access sequence identification in included in the access-terminal page message.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein responding using the first type of access sequence identifier comprises responding responsive to detection of a quick paging channel page.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the access-terminal page message comprises a regular paging channel page message.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the access sequence identifier included in the access-terminal page message is dedicated for exclusive use of a responding access terminal.

5. An apparatus for responding to an access-terminal page, said apparatus comprising:

a receiver to receive an access-terminal page message from an access network;

a first responder configured to respond to the access-terminal page message using a first type of access sequence identifier if the access-terminal page message does not include an access sequence identifier, wherein the first responder is further configured to access an access-terminal pool of access sequence identifiers and randomly selects an access-terminal-stored access sequence identifier therefrom as the first type of access sequence identifier; and

a second responder configured to respond to the access terminal page message using a second type of access sequence identifier from another group of access sequence identifiers selected based on the access sequence identifier included in the access-terminal page message if the access-terminal page message includes the access sequence identifier and an access sequence identifier field indicates access sequence identification in included in the access-terminal page message.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein response made by said first responder comprises response to a quick paging channel page.

7. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the access sequence identifier included in the access-terminal page message is dedicated for exclusive use of a responding access terminal.

8. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the access sequence chosen from the group is selected from a group of access sequences not conveyed via paging messages.
