Abstract

The invention is directed to a ventilation control system for controlling the ventilation of a patient. The ventilation control system utilizes a user-friendly user interface for the display of patient data and ventilator status. The user interface includes a graphic representation of a breath cycle that displays the breath cycle currently being ventilated, and is also responsive to changes in ventilation settings to assist the user in evaluation the effect of those changes on the ventilator strategy before the changes are implemented.

Claims (38)

1. A breathing assistance system, comprising:

a display device configured to simultaneously display:

a main settings display area for displaying a plurality of different main control settings for providing ventilation assistance to a patient, wherein each main control setting of the plurality of different main control settings has a set of ventilation parameters corresponding to the main control setting and wherein the main settings display area further comprises:

an un-adjustable first subarea displaying a currently selected main control setting; and

an un-adjustable second subarea displaying a set of ventilation parameters corresponding to the currently selected main control setting;

a proposed settings display area providing adjustable settings for a set of ventilation parameters corresponding to a provisionally selected main control setting that is different from the currently selected main control setting; and

a controller configured to control a gas delivery device to deliver gas to a patient consistent with the set of ventilation parameters corresponding to the provisionally selected main control setting upon receiving a batch adjustment of the set of ventilation parameters corresponding to the provisionally selected main control setting.

2. A system according to claim 1 , wherein the display device comprises one or more touch sensitive screen elements and:

the proposed settings display area allows for touch screen input; and

the main settings display area does not allow for touch screen input.

3. A system according to claim 1 , wherein:

the plurality of different main control settings comprise a plurality of different ventilation modes and a plurality of different ventilation types; and

the proposed settings display area further provides adjustable settings for selection of a particular ventilation mode and a particular ventilation type corresponding to the provisionally selected main control setting.

4. A system according to claim 3 , wherein:

the plurality of different ventilation modes includes at least one of an assist/control (A/C) mode, a synchronous intermittent mandatory ventilation (SIMV) mode, and a spontaneous respiration (SPONT) mode; and

the plurality of different ventilation types includes at least one of a mandatory type and a spontaneous type.

5. A system according to claim 1 , wherein the breathing assistance system further comprises a rotatable knob for adjusting a setting for a selected ventilation parameter.

6. A system according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of the set of ventilation parameters corresponding to the main control setting is different from at least one of the ventilation parameters corresponding to the provisionally selected main control setting.

7. A system according to claim 1 , wherein:

the breathing assistance system comprises a memory; and

the display device is further configured to simultaneously display a proceed button, wherein receiving a selection of the proceed button results in storing the batch adjustment of the set of ventilation parameters corresponding to a provisionally selected main control setting in the memory.

8. A system according to claim 1 , wherein each of the set of ventilation parameters corresponding to the provisionally selected main control setting comprises at least one selectable on-screen button.

9. A method of managing breathing assistance, comprising:

displaying a main settings display area providing a plurality of different main control settings for providing ventilation assistance to a patient, wherein each main control setting of the plurality of different main control settings has a set of ventilation parameters corresponding to the main control setting and wherein displaying the main settings display area further comprises:

displaying a currently selected main control setting within an un-adjustable first subarea; and

displaying a set of ventilation parameters corresponding to the currently selected main control setting within an un-adjustable second subarea;

simultaneously displaying with the main settings display area a proposed settings display area providing adjustable settings for selecting a provisionally selected main control setting that is different from the currently selected main control setting;

receiving a selection of the provisionally selected main control setting;

further displaying within the proposed settings display area a set of ventilation parameters corresponding to the provisionally selected main control setting;

receiving a batch adjustment that provisionally adjusts a plurality of the adjustable settings from the set of ventilation parameters corresponding to the provisionally selected main control setting; and

in response to receiving the batch adjustment that provisionally adjusts the plurality of the adjustable settings from the set of ventilation parameters corresponding to the provisionally selected main control setting, controlling a gas delivery device to deliver gas to a patient based on the provisionally selected main control setting and the plurality of the adjustable settings from the set of ventilation parameters corresponding to the provisionally selected main control setting.

10. A method according to claim 9 , wherein:

the plurality of different main control settings comprise a plurality of different ventilation modes and a plurality of different ventilation types; and

receiving the selection of the provisionally selected main control setting comprises receiving a selection of a particular ventilation mode and a particular ventilation type.

11. A method according to claim 10 , wherein:

the plurality of different ventilation modes includes at least one of an assist/control (A/C) mode, a synchronous intermittent mandatory ventilation (SIMV) mode, and a spontaneous respiration (SPONT) mode; and

the plurality of different ventilation types includes at least one of a mandatory type and a spontaneous type.

12. A method according to claim 9 , wherein receiving the selection of the provisionally selected main control setting comprises receiving a selection of a particular ventilation parameter via one or more touch sensitive screen elements and receiving the batch adjustment that provisionally adjusts the plurality of the adjustable settings from the set of ventilation parameters corresponding to the provisionally selected main control setting comprises receiving an adjustment via a rotatable knob.
