Abstract

A fluid consuming battery ( 10 ) is provided with a fluid regulating system ( 50 ) for regulating fluid entry into the battery. The battery ( 10 ) includes a fluid consuming cell ( 20 ) having a cell housing with fluid entry ports for the passage of a fluid into the cell housing. A first fluid consuming electrode and a second electrode are disposed within the cell housing. The fluid regulating system ( 50 ) includes a valve having a moving plate ( 66 ) disposed adjacent to a fixed plate ( 62 ). The moving plate and fixed plate both have fluid entry ports ( 68, 64 ) that align in an open valve position and are misaligned in a closed valve position. The fluid regulating system ( 50 ) also includes an actuator that may include one or more shape memory alloy (SMA) components ( 82 a, 82 b ) for moving the moving plate ( 66 ) relative to the fixed plate ( 62 ) to open and close the valve. The chassis ( 550 ) may include an electrically conductive frame ( 500 ) integrally formed therein.

Claims (30)

1. A battery comprising:

at least one fluid consuming cell comprising a cell housing having one or more fluid entry ports for the passage of a fluid into the cell, a first fluid consuming electrode disposed within said cell housing, and a second electrode disposed within said cell housing; and

a fluid regulating system comprising:

a valve comprising a moving plate having at least one aperture and being movable to open and close the valve to control entry of fluid to the one or more fluid entry ports;

an actuator for actuating the moving plate to open and close the valve;

a chassis supporting the moving plate and the actuator, wherein the chassis is made of an electrically non-conductive material; and

an electrically conductive frame comprising electrically conductive circuit elements, said frame having one or more electrical components mounted thereon and being substantially encapsulated within the chassis.

2. The battery as defined in claim 1 , wherein the electrically conductive frame comprises one or more contacts for connecting to one or more electrical terminals of the actuator.

3. The battery as defined in claim 2 , wherein the contacts comprise bent portions of the electrically conductive frame, wherein the bent portions are resilient.

4. The battery as defined in claim 2 , wherein the chassis further comprises one or more openings and the actuator comprises one or more crimp connectors that form the one or more electrical terminals, wherein the one or more crimp connectors are press fit in the respective one or more openings.

5. The battery as defined in claim 1 , wherein the electrically conductive frame further comprises one or more battery contacts bent over an outer surface of the chassis and in contact with a battery terminal.

6. The battery as defined in claim 5 , wherein the at least one battery contact comprises a positive contact connected to a positive battery terminal and a negative contact connected to a negative battery terminal.

7. The battery as defined in claim 6 , wherein the electrically non-conductive material of the chassis has a coefficient of thermal expansion that substantially matches the coefficient of thermal expansion of the electrically conductive frame.

8. The battery as defined in claim 1 , wherein the chassis comprises an epoxy.

9. The battery as defined in claim 1 , wherein the electrically conductive frame comprises a nickel-cobalt ferrous alloy.

10. The battery as defined in claim 1 , wherein the valve comprises a fixed plate disposed adjacent to the moving plate, wherein the moving and fixed plates each have at least one plate aperture and the moving plate is movable relative to the fixed plate so that the at least one plate aperture of the moving plate moves in and out of alignment with the at least one plate aperture of the fixed plate.

11. A fluid regulating system for regulating fluid entry to a fluid consuming battery, said fluid regulating system comprising:

a valve comprising a moving plate having at least one aperture and being movable to open and close the valve to control entry of fluid to a fluid consuming cell;

an actuator for actuating the moving plate to open and close the valve;

a chassis supporting the moving plate and the actuator, wherein the chassis is made of an electrically non-conductive material; and

an electrically conductive frame comprising electrically conductive circuit elements, said frame having one or more electrical components mounted thereon and being substantially encapsulated within the chassis.

12. The fluid regulating system as defined in claim 11 , wherein the electrically conductive frame comprises one or more contacts for connecting to one or more electrical terminals of the actuator.

13. The fluid regulating system as defined in claim 12 , wherein the contacts comprise bent portions of the electrically conductive frame, wherein the bent portions are resilient.

14. The fluid regulating system as defined in claim 12 , wherein the chassis further comprises one or more openings and the actuator comprises one or more crimp connectors that form the one or more electrical terminals, wherein the one or more crimp connectors are press fit in the respective one or more openings.

15. The fluid regulating system as defined in claim 11 , wherein the electrically conductive frame further comprises one or more battery contacts bent over an outer surface of the chassis and adapted to be in contact with a battery terminal.

16. The fluid regulating system as defined in claim 15 , wherein the at least one battery contact comprises a positive contact adapted to be connected to a positive battery terminal and a negative contact adapted to be connected to a negative battery terminal.

17. The fluid regulating system as defined in claim 11 , wherein the electrically non-conductive material of the chassis has a coefficient of thermal expansion that substantially matches the coefficient of thermal expansion of the electrically conductive frame.

18. The fluid regulating system as defined in claim 11 , wherein the chassis comprises an epoxy.

19. The fluid regulating system as defined in claim 11 , wherein the electrically conductive frame comprises a nickel-cobalt ferrous alloy.

20. The fluid regulating system as defined in claim 11 , wherein the valve further comprises a fixed plate disposed adjacent to the moving plate, wherein the moving and fixed plates each have at least one plate aperture and the moving plate is movable relative to the fixed plate so that the at least one plate aperture of the moving plate moves in and out of alignment with the at least one plate aperture of the fixed plate.
