Abstract

An illumination apparatus includes: a red light valve configured to modulate red component light according to a red input signal; a green light valve configured to modulate green component light according to a green input signal; a blue light valve configured to modulate blue component light according to a blue input signal; a fourth color light valve configured to modulate a fourth color component light; and a color combiner configured to combine light emitted from the red light valve, the green light valve and the blue light valve. The fourth color component light emitted from the fourth color light valve enters a certain light valve, which is any one of the red light valve, the green light valve and the blue light valve.

Claims (33)

1. An illumination apparatus comprising:

a red light valve configured to modulate red component light according to a red input signal;

a green light valve configured to modulate green component light according to a green input signal;

a blue light valve configured to modulate blue component light according to a blue input signal;

a fourth color light valve configured to modulate a fourth color component light; and

a color combiner configured to combine light emitted from the red light valve, the green light valve and the blue light valve, wherein,

the fourth color component light emitted from the fourth color light valve enters a certain light valve, the certain light valve is any one of the red light valve, the green light valve and the blue light valve.

2. The illumination apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein resolution of the fourth color light valve is lower than resolutions of the red light valve, the green light valve and the blue light valve.

3. The illumination apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a modulation amount controller configured to control an amount of modulation of the fourth color light valve based on the red input signal, the green input signal and the blue input signal.

4. The illumination apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising an image forming unit configured to cause the fourth color component light emitted from the fourth color light valve to approximately form an image on a light valve on which the fourth color component light emitted from the fourth color light valve enters.

5. The illumination apparatus according to claim 1 wherein,

the fourth color component light is yellow component light, and

the illumination apparatus further comprising:

a polarization rotation element configured to shift a polarization state of any one of the red component light and the yellow component light, to emit combined light including the red component light and the yellow component light; and

a polarization light separation element configured to separate the combined light emitted from the polarization rotation element into the red component light and the yellow component light, according to a polarization direction of the color component light.

6. The illumination apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a color separation element configured to separate combined light including superimposed component light and the fourth component light into the superimposed component light and the fourth component light, the superimposed component light is any one the red component light, the green component light and the blue component light, wherein,

the color separation element has a first light incident surface on which the combined light enters and a second light incident surface on which the fourth color component light separated by the color separation element enters again, and

a relay optics is provided after the fourth color component light is separated by the color separation element and before the fourth color component light reenters the second light incident surface, includes a relay lens group that inverts the top and bottom and the right and left of the fourth color component light for an even number of times, and a mirror group that inverts the right and left of the fourth color component light for an odd number of times.

7. The illumination apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein,

the fourth color component light and a certain color component light enter the certain light valve, the certain color component light is any one of the red component light, the green component light and the blue component light,

the certain light valve has a light incident side polarizing plate provided on a light-incident side and a light emitting side polarizing plate provided on a light-emitting side,

the light-incident side polarizing plate shields the fourth color component light when the fourth color component light is not to be emitted to the color combiner side, and

the light-emitting side polarizing plate shields the certain color component light when the certain color component light is not to be emitted to the color combiner side.

8. A projection-type image display apparatus comprising:

a light source;

a color separator configured to separate light emitted from the light source into red component light, green component light, blue component light and a fourth color component light;

a red light valve configured to modulate the red component light according to a red input signal;

a green light valve configured to modulate the green component light according to a green input signal;

a blue light valve configured to modulate the blue component light according to a blue input signal;

a fourth color light valve configured to modulate the fourth color component light;

a color combiner configured to combine light emitted from the red light valve, the green light valve and the blue light valve; and

a projection mean configured to project light combined by the color combiner, wherein,

the fourth color component light emitted from the fourth color light valve enters a certain light valve, the certain valve is any one of the red light valve, the green light valve and the blue light valve.
