Abstract

A transfer and dispensing apparatus is disclosed for the conveying and separation of packaging material, cushions or pillows when needed by the operator. When a packer working over a conveyor receives a box that requires void fill, an operating switch such as a foot pedal is depressed to dispense pillows from the apparatus and into the box in a connected strip. When the operating switch is released, the apparatus stops dispensing pillows, separates the continuous strip of pillows along a transverse perforation in the strip, and ejects the end of the separated segment. The packer can then complete packing the box by placing the severed end of the pillows into the box, advance to the next box, and repeat the process. The transfer and dispensing apparatus may be positioned in any convenient location including adjacent to, above or attached to the inflation device.

Claims (41)

1. A packaging material transfer apparatus, comprising:

a plurality of traction members configured for engaging a chain of pre-inflated pillows connected to each other end to end;

driving mechanism operably associated with the traction members to drive the traction members for drawing the chain from an input location to an output location from which the pillows are dispensed;

a drive configured for powering the driving mechanism;

detachment mechanism including a detachment element that rotates transversely through a weakened area between adjacent pillows in the chain to break the weakened area for detaching at least one of the pillows from the chain; and

an interior support member associated with the driving mechanism for supporting the chain on opposite longitudinal sides of the weakened area against the operation of the detachment element moving therethrough.

2. The transfer apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the traction members are spaced circumferentially about the driving mechanism at a predetermined distance from each other corresponding to recessed zones of the chain such that the traction members are receivable within the recessed zones to engage and move the chain.

3. The transfer apparatus of claim 2 , further comprising a guide surface configured for guiding the pillows therealong, wherein the driving mechanism is configured for moving the traction members along a path adjacent the guide surface for trapping the pillows between traction members and the guide surface.

4. The transfer apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the guide surface is stationary.

5. The transfer apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the guide surface is arcuate.

6. The transfer apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the driving mechanism comprises a drum to which the traction members are mounted to drive the traction members along a curved path.

7. The transfer apparatus of claim 2 , comprising a pillow detector configured for detecting positions of the pillows and associated with the drive for interrupting the powering of the driving mechanism based on the detected positions of the pillows.

8. The transfer apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the detachment mechanism includes at least one cutter configured to rotate through the weakened area to separate adjacent pillows configured for detaching at least one of the pillows from the chain.

9. The transfer apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the traction members comprises nip elements configured to grippingly nip the chain, and the driving mechanism is configured to rotate the nip elements to draw the chain.

10. The transfer apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the nip elements comprise rollers or conveyers extending on opposite sides of a longitudinal axis of the chain.

11. The transfer apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the traction members comprise forward and aft traction members that are disposed forward and aft of each other with respect to the chain, and the driving mechanism is configured for operating the forward and aft traction members at different speeds to detach at least one pillow from the chain.

12. The transfer apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the driving mechanism is configured for operating the forward and aft traction members at different speeds to initiate a tear between the at least one pillow and the chain at a lateral location on the chain between the pillows.

13. A pillow chain transfer system, comprising first and second transfer apparatuses as defined in claim 2 , which are disposed and associated for transferring the chain from the input location of the first transfer apparatus to the output location of the second transfer apparatus.

14. transfer apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the driving mechanism includes a drum configured for drawing the chain of pre-inflated pillows further comprising:

an exterior support member associated with the drum for supporting the chain from a radially exterior side of the drum; and

a biasing member associated with the drum for biasing the chain radially outwardly against the exterior support member for trapping the pillows between biasing members and the exterior support member.

15. The transfer apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the biasing member comprises a member extending laterally across the drum.

16. The transfer apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the exterior support member comprises a guide surface configured for guiding the pillows therealong.

17. The transfer apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the detachment element comprises at least one cutter configured to move through the weakened area to separate adjacent pillows, the transfer apparatus further comprising an interior support member associated with the drum for supporting the chain on opposite longitudinal sides of the weakened area against the operation of the cutter moving therethrough.

18. The transfer apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the detachment element comprises at least one cutter configured to move through the weakened area to separate adjacent pillows.

19. The transfer apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the cutter comprises first and second cutters configured to move in opposite directions through the weakened area to cooperatively pull against the material of the chain of pillows around the weakened area.

20. The transfer apparatus of claim 1 , comprising a pillow detector configured for detecting positions of the pillows and configured for operating the detachment element for detaching the at least one pillow based on the detected positions of the pillows.

21. The transfer apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the detachment element is configured to break a weakened area between adjacent pillows in the chain.

22. The transfer apparatus of claim 21 , wherein the detachment element is rounded for biasing the chain downward.

23. The transfer apparatus of claim 22 , wherein the detachment element is blunt.

24. A packaging material transfer apparatus, comprising:

a plurality of traction members configured for engaging a chain of pre-inflated pillows connected to each other end to end and disposed at a predetermined distance from each other corresponding to recessed, weakened areas of the chain, such that the traction members are receivable within the recessed zones to engage and move the chain, and at least one of the traction members defining a transverse slot positioned at the weakened areas when the traction members are engaged with the chain;

driving mechanism operably associated with the traction members to drive the traction members for drawing the chain from an input location to an output location from which the pillows are dispensed;

a drive configured for powering the driving mechanism; and

a detachment mechanism including at least two detachment elements that move in opposite directions and rotate transversely between the slot for breaking through the weakened area.

25. The transfer apparatus of claim 24 , wherein the pillow detector comprises a vacuum source configured to detect that detects changes in vacuum depending on the region of the chain associated therewith as the chain is moved in relation thereto to determine said positions.

26. A packaging material transfer apparatus, comprising:

a plurality of traction members configured for engaging a chain of pre-inflated pillows connected to each other end to end and disposed at a predetermined distance from each other corresponding to recessed, weakened areas of the chain, such that the traction members are receivable within the recessed zones to engage and move the chain, and at least one of the traction members defining a transverse slot positioned at the weakened areas when the traction members are engaged with the chain;

driving mechanism operably associated with the traction members to drive the traction members for drawing the chain from an input location to an output location from which the pillows are dispensed;
