Abstract

A device that relieves lubricant pressure in a divider block lubrication system into a fluid reservoir, a container, or directly back into the compressor frame to which the tubing is connected. This eliminates housekeeping, environmental, safety, and compressor component failure concerns associated with current atmospheric rupture assemblies that relieve directly to the atmosphere. The environmental compressor protection assembly contains a spring set to a pre-determined pressure. Lubricant pressure in excess of this pre-determined set pressure results in spring compression and opening of a relief path. The assembly preferably remains in a full open position and must be must be manually reset to the closed position to prevent fluid flow in the system. The relief path can lead to a fluid reservoir, a container, or directly back into the compressor frame. Flow of lubricant through the relief path results in loss of flow to the lubrication system. This triggers an alarm in the no-flow system and shutdown of the compressor. The relief path remains open until an operator resets the device. A visual indicator shows an operator if the relief valve is open or closed.

Claims (35)

1. A natural gas compressor lubrication system, comprising:

a positive displacement lubricant pump;

a pressure relief valve assembly, including:

a housing having an opening to the high pressure side of the pump and having a relief passage;

a conduit connected from the relief passage to a fluid reservoir;

a pressure relief valve having an open position in which fluid from the high pressure side of the pump can enter the relief passage and a closed position in which fluid from the high pressure side of the pump is prevented from entering the relief passage;

a biasing element for maintaining a biasing force on the pressure relief valve, the pressure relief valve being maintained in the closed position when the biasing force exceeds the fluid force on the pressure relief valve, and the pressure relief valve moving into the open position when the fluid force on the pressure relief valve exceeds the biasing force on the pressure relief valve;

a catch for maintaining the pressure relief valve, after it has been opened, in the open position until the pressure relief valve is manually reset; and

a visible indicator to indicate when the pressure relief valve is in the open position;

a divider block for distributing the lubricant from the pump to multiple lubrication points associated with one or more compressors.

2. The natural gas compressor lubrication system of claim 1 in which the pressure relief valve comprises a piston and at least one seal, the piston adapted to move within the housing and the seal preventing leakage of fluid around the piston.

3. The natural gas compressor lubrication system of claim 2 further comprising a rod attached to the piston and in which the catch includes a lever oriented at an angle to the rod, the lever providing a force on the rod to maintain the valve in the open position once opened until the lever is moved.

4. The natural gas compressor lubrication system of claim 1 in which the biasing element is a spring.

5. The natural gas compressor lubrication system of claim 1 further comprising a switch activated by the valve opening that provides a signal upon the opening of the pressure relief valve assembly.

6. The natural gas compressor lubrication system of claim 1 in which the positive displacement pump provides a low volume of fluid at a high pressure.

7. A pressure relief valve assembly for use in a high pressure, low volume fluid distribution system, comprising:

a housing having an opening to the fluid distribution system and a relief passage for attaching a conduit;

a pressure relief valve having an open position in which fluid from the fluid distribution system can enter through the opening to the relief passage, and a closed position in which fluid from the fluid distribution system is prevented from entering the relief passage;

a biasing element for maintaining a biasing force on the pressure relief valve, the pressure relief valve being maintained in the closed position when the biasing force exceeds the fluid force on the pressure relief valve, and the pressure relief valve moving into the open position when the fluid force on the pressure relief valve exceeds the biasing force on the pressure relief valve;

a catch for maintaining the pressure relief valve, after it has been opened, in the open position until the pressure relief valve is manually reset; and

a visible indicator to indicate when the pressure relief valve is in the open position.

8. The pressure relief valve assembly of claim 7 in which the pressure relief valve comprises a piston and at least one seal, the piston adapted to move within the housing and the seal preventing leakage of fluid around the piston.

9. The pressure relief valve assembly of claim 8 further comprising a rod attached to the piston and in which the catch includes a lever oriented at an angle to the rod, the lever providing a force on the rod to maintain the valve in the open position once opened until the lever is moved.

10. The pressure relief valve assembly of claim 7 in which the visible indicator includes a portion that extends from the housing when the valve is open.

11. The pressure relief valve assembly of claim 7 further comprising a switch that provides a signal upon the opening of the pressure relief valve assembly.

12. A method of operating a high pressure, low volume lubrication system, comprising:

providing a pressure relief valve that opens at a specified pressure to divert lubricant to a fluid reservoir and that remains open until manually closed;

automatically opening the pressure relief valve when the pressure in the lubrication system exceeds the specified pressure;

in response to automatically opening the pressure relief valve:

maintaining the pressure relief valve in the open position with a catch until the pressure relief valve is manually reset;

determining the event which caused the relief valve to open;

correcting the cause of the event which caused the relief valve to open; and

manually resetting the valve to cease the diversion of the lubricant to the fluid reservoir.

13. The method of claim 12 in which manually resetting the valve to cease the diversion of the lubricant to the fluid reservoir includes activating a switch to cease the diversion.

14. The method of claim 12 in which manually resetting the valve to cease the diversion of the lubricant to the fluid reservoir includes applying a force by hand to reset the valve.
