Abstract

A modular knee system having various distal posterior femoral components that are interchangeable with each other and with various patellar-femoral joint components. Preferably, the modular knee system has a variety of components that are interchangeable and connectable to resurface the distal femur using either a unicompartmental femoral knee prosthesis or a bicompartmental femoral knee prosthesis. These components include a medial distal posterior femoral component, a lateral distal posterior femoral component, a patellar-femoral joint component, and an interconnection mechanism to modularly connect the components together.

Claims (18)

1. A method of assembling a knee prosthesis for implantation into a patient, the method comprising:

providing a plurality of posterior femoral joint components;

providing plurality of distal posterior femoral joint components a distal posterior femoral joint components;

determining the ethnicity of the patient;

selecting one of the plurality of posterior femoral joint components based on the patient's ethnicity;

selecting at least one of the plurality of distal posterior femoral joint components; and

assembling the selected one of the plurality of posterior femoral joint components and the selected one of the plurality of distal posterior femoral joint components to form the knee prosthesis.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the plurality of distal posterior femoral joint components comprises at least two separate components.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one of the plurality of distal posterior femoral joint components comprises a medial distal posterior femoral joint component and a lateral distal posterior femoral joint component.

4. A method of assembling a knee prosthesis for implantation into a patient, the method comprising:

providing a posterior femoral joint component;

providing a plurality of distal posterior femoral joint components;

determining the ethnicity of the patient;

selecting at least one of the plurality of the distal posterior femoral joint components based on the patient's ethnicity;

assembling the posterior femoral joint component and the selected at least one of the plurality of distal posterior femoral joint components to form the knee prosthesis.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the step of providing a posterior femoral joint component further comprises providing a plurality of posterior femoral joint components, the method further comprising, before the assembling step, the step of selecting one of the plurality of posterior femoral joint components.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein at least one of the plurality of distal posterior femoral joint components comprises at least two separate components.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the distal posterior femoral joint component comprises a medial distal posterior femoral joint component and a lateral distal posterior femoral joint component.
