Abstract

A system and method for implementing fairness in the powering of computing devices in a power over Ethernet (PoE) application. Power supplies in a power sourcing equipment are often oversubscribed. This oversubscription can lead to starvation of certain computing devices that have power requests that are not granted relative to competing requests. A fairness consideration can be implemented to ensure that starvation conditions are avoided.

Claims (27)

1. A power over Ethernet method, comprising:

allocating power to a first plurality of computing devices in a first time period, wherein said power allocation across said first plurality of computing devices is substantially equivalent to a total available power budget in a power sourcing equipment;

identifying a computing device that is in a starvation condition due to a deficient allocation of power in at least said first time period;

determining a reallocation of power to address said starvation condition in said identified computing device, said determining including increasing a priority of said identified computing device; and

reallocating said total available power budget to a second plurality of computing devices in a second time period subsequent to said first time period, wherein said second plurality of computing devices includes said identified computing device.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said first and second plurality of computing devices is the same.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said second time period is identified during said determination.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising polling a plurality of computing devices to identify respective power needs.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein said starvation condition is defined as a period of time that a requesting computing device has not received a power allocation.

6. A power over Ethernet method, comprising:

allocating power to a first plurality of computing devices in a first time period, wherein said power allocation across said first plurality of computing devices is substantially equivalent to a total amount of power available to a power sourcing equipment;

identifying a computing device that is in a starvation condition due to a deficient allocation of power to said identified computing device in at least said first time period, said identified computing device having a priority that is lower than a priority threshold used to determine an allocation of power to said first plurality of computing devices;

determining a reallocation of said total amount of power available to said power sourcing equipment in response to said starvation condition in said identified computing device, said determining including increasing said priority of said identified computing device; and

reallocating said total amount of power available to a second plurality of computing devices in a second time period subsequent to said first time period, wherein said second plurality of computing devices includes said identified computing device, said identified computing device receiving an allocation of power beyond said deficient allocation of power during said first time period.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein said deficient allocation of power is a zero allocation of power.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein said first and second plurality of computing devices is the same.

9. The method of claim 6 , wherein said second time period is identified during said determination.

10. The method of claim 6 , further comprising polling a plurality of computing devices to identify respective power needs.

11. A power over Ethernet method, comprising:

allocating power to a first plurality of computing devices in a first time period, wherein said power allocation across said first plurality of computing devices is substantially equivalent to a total amount of power available to a power sourcing equipment;

detecting a starvation condition in an identified computing device, said starvation condition occurring when said identified computing device receives a deficient allocation of power in at least said first time period, said identified computing device having a priority that is lower than a priority threshold used to determine an allocation of power to said first plurality of computing devices;

in response to said detecting, determining a reallocation of said total amount of power available to said power sourcing equipment, said determining including increasing said priority of said identified computing device; and

reallocating said total amount of power available to a second plurality of computing devices in a second time period subsequent to said first time period, wherein said second plurality of computing devices includes said identified computing device, said identified computing device receiving an allocation of power beyond said deficient allocation of power during said first time period.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein said deficient allocation of power is a zero allocation of power.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein said first and second plurality of computing devices is the same.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein said second time period is identified during said determination.

15. The method of claim 11 , further comprising polling a plurality of computing devices to identify respective power needs.
