2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the prenatal administration of Lactobacillus GG comprises ingestion of Lactobacillus GG by the pregnant mother of the unborn infant.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the postnatal administration of Lactobacillus GG comprises ingestion of Lactobacillus GG by the infant's mother followed by breast feeding of the infant by the mother.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the postnatal administration of Lactobacillus GG comprises incorporation of the Lactobacillus GG into an infant formula and consumption of the formula by the infant.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the amount of Lactobacillus GG administered to the infant is between about 1×10 4 and 1×10 12 cfu/L/kg/day.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the amount of Lactobacillus GG administered to the infant is between about 1×10 6 and 1×10 9 cfu/L/kg/day.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises administering to the infant at least one probiotic.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises administering to the infant at least one prebiotic.

9. A method for decreasing mucus production in the airway of an infant, the method comprising prenatally administering and/or postnatally administering to the subject an effective amount of Lactobacillus GG prior to allergic sensitization of the infant.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the prenatal administration of Lactobacillus GG comprises ingestion of Lactobacillus GG by the pregnant mother of the unborn infant.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the postnatal administration of Lactobacillus GG comprises ingestion of Lactobacillus GG by the infant's mother followed by breast feeding of the infant by the mother.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the postnatal administration of Lactobacillus GG comprises incorporation of the Lactobacillus GG into an infant formula and consumption of the formula by the infant.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the amount of Lactobacillus GG administered to the infant is between about 1×10 4 and 1×10 12 cfu/L/kg/day.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein the amount of Lactobacillus GG administered to the infant is between about 1×10 6 and 1×10 9 cfu/L/kg/day.

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein the method further comprises administering to the infant at least one probiotic.

16. The method of claim 9 , wherein the method further comprises administering to the infant at least one prebiotic.
