Abstract

An electrode for use in applying neuromuscular electrical stimulation to the pharyngeal region of a patient includes a connector to which a lead wire may be attached, a conductive film that is in electrical contact with the connector and an adhesive and conductive gel layer that is attached to the conductive film and adapted to be attached to the skin of the pharyngeal region of the patient. The electrode is sized and configured to conduct current at a density no greater than about 0.1244 mA/mM 2 to the skin of the pharyngeal region for treatment of an oropharyngeal disorder.

Claims (16)

1. An electrode for use in applying neuromuscular electrical stimulation to the pharyngeal region of a patient, said electrode comprising:

(a) a connector to which a lead wire may be attached, the connector having a first side and a second side;

(b) a conductive film that is in electrical contact with the first side of the connector;

(c) a conductive bond tape layer attached to the second side of the connector and configured to securely connect the connector to the conductive film; and

(d) an adhesive and conductive gel layer that is attached to the conductive film and adapted to be attached to the skin of the pharyngeal region of the patient.

2. The electrode of claim 1 :

(a) which includes a snap eyelet having a first side and a second side, which second side includes the connector;

(b) wherein the conductive film is attached to the first side of the snap eyelet.

3. The electrode of claim 1 , said electrode being sized and configured to conduct current at a range of 0-25 milliamps over a circular area having a diameter in the range of 16-22 millimeters to the skin of the pharyngeal region for treatment of an oropharyngeal disorder.

4. The electrode of claim 1 wherein the adhesive and conductive gel layer has a skin contact area within the range of 200-380 mm 2 .

5. The electrode of claim 1 which has a maximum impedance of about 150 ohms when used to conduct electrical pulses at a frequency of about 80 Hz.

6. The electrode of claim 1 wherein the conductive film has a diameter within the range of 16-22 mm.

7. The electrode of claim 6 wherein the conductive film comprises a carbon film having a thickness of about 0.10 mm.

8. An electrode array adapted to conform to a pharyngeal region of a patient, said electrode comprising:

at least two spaced apart connectors configured to attach to lead wires, and

a tape overlay connected to the at least two connectors, wherein the tape overlay is adapted to selectively place the at least two connectors with respect to each other in electrical contact with the tissue of the pharyngeal region of the patient, and wherein the tape overlay includes a centrally located slot having opposing longitudinal edges that extend over exterior surfaces of the at least two spaced apart connectors and adheres to the exterior surfaces of each of the two connectors.
