Abstract

Discrete events that take place with respect to a hard disk drive or other I/O device or port are indicated to logic that implements Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology (SMART) or similar technology. These events are communicated to SMART as event data. Examples of such discrete events include power on, power off, spindle start, and spindle stop, positioning of the actuator, and the time at which such events occur. SMART then compiles event data to create compiled activity data. Compiled activity data represents summary statistical information that is created by considering some or all of the event data. Examples of compiled activity data include the Time Powered On and Power Cycle Count. Collection logic then writes the compiled activity data to a memory medium. An analyst can then read data from log file(s).

Claims (42)

1. A method within an individual semiconductor memory unit for creating a data set relating to operational and connection status of the individual semiconductor memory unit, the data set capable of being analyzed, the method comprising:

collecting compiled historical activity data and connection state data regarding activity of the individual semiconductor memory unit, wherein the connection state data includes data regarding a connection status of a device connected to the individual semiconductor memory unit and a time when the connection with the device was active, and wherein the historical activity data includes data regarding a time powered on and power cycle count of the individual semiconductor memory unit;

writing the compiled historical activity and connection state data to a location within the individual semiconductor memory unit;

polling a communications port of the individual semiconductor memory unit to determine if the individual semiconductor memory unit is connected to another device or system;

if not, writing an indication of detachment to the individual semiconductor memory unit;

if so, querying the connected device or system for identifying information;

if no identifying information is obtained, writing an indication of a lack of identifying information to the individual semiconductor memory unit; and

if identifying information is obtained, writing the identifying information to the individual semiconductor memory unit.

2. An individual semiconductor memory unit for creating a data set relating to operational and connection status of the individual semiconductor memory unit, the data set capable of being analyzed, comprising:

a processor; and

a first storage medium in communication with said processor, said first storage medium for storing a plurality of processing instructions for directing said processor to:

collect compiled historical activity data and connection state data regarding activity of the individual semiconductor memory unit, wherein the connection state data includes data regarding a connection status of a device connected to the individual semiconductor memory unit and a time when the connection with the device was active, and wherein the historical activity data includes data regarding a time powered on and power cycle count of the individual semiconductor memory unit;

write the compiled historical activity and connection state data to a second storage medium within the individual semiconductor memory unit;

poll a communications port of the individual semiconductor memory unit to determine if the individual semiconductor memory unit is connected to another device or another system;

if not, write an indication of detachment to the second storage medium;

if so, query the connected other device or other system for identifying information;

if no identifying information is obtained, write an indication of a lack of identifying information to the second storage medium; and

if the identifying information is obtained, write the identifying information to the second storage medium.

3. A method within an individual semiconductor memory unit for creating a data set relating to operational and connection status of the individual semiconductor memory unit, the method comprising:

collecting compiled data regarding activity of the individual semiconductor memory unit;

writing the compiled data to a location within the individual semiconductor memory unit;

reading at least a portion of the compiled data from the individual semiconductor memory unit; and

analyzing the compiled data for time gaps or inconsistencies to assess whether the individual semiconductor memory unit was accessed in read-only mode since a last recorded shut down of the individual semiconductor memory unit.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the individual semiconductor memory unit is non-volatile.

5. A system for creating a data set relating to operational and connection status of an individual semiconductor memory unit, comprising:

a processor; and

a first storage medium in communication with the processor, said first storage medium for storing a plurality of processing instructions for directing the processor to:

collect compiled data regarding activity of the individual semiconductor memory unit,

analyze the compiled data for time gaps or inconsistencies to assess whether the individual semiconductor memory unit was accessed in read-only mode since a last recorded shut down of the individual semiconductor memory unit, and

write the compiled data to a second storage medium within the individual semiconductor memory unit.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the individual semiconductor memory unit is non-volatile.

7. A method within a hard disk for creating a data set relating to operational and connection status of the hard disk, the method comprising:

collecting compiled data regarding activity of the hard disk;

writing the compiled data to a location within the hard disk;

reading at least a portion of the compiled data from the hard disk; and

analyzing the compiled data for time gaps or inconsistencies to assess whether the hard disk was accessed in read-only mode since a last recorded shut down of the hard disk.

8. A system for creating a data set relating to operational and connection status of a hard disk, comprising:

a processor; and

a first storage medium in communication with the processor, said first storage medium for storing a plurality of processing instructions for directing the processor to:

collect compiled data regarding activity of the hard disk,

analyze the compiled data for time gaps or inconsistencies to assess whether the hard disk was accessed in read-only mode since a last recorded shut down of the hard disk, and

write the compiled data to a second storage medium within the hard disk.
