Abstract

Controllers associated with the high energy devices may are programmed or configured with processing rules by a building manager or an energy usage coordinator such that the controllers can respond to various changing conditions without having to be contacted by the energy usage controller. Such autonomous control allows the controllers to react more quickly to potentially take advantage of advantageous conditions and/or avoid disadvantageous conditions. For example, by tracking information from market information services and/or from historical, current and predicted information services, a controller may be programmed to reduce energy usage autonomously under a number of programmable conditions.

Claims (20)

1 . A controller for controlling energy usage of a high energy device, the system comprising:

a communications adapter for receiving information from a market information service and a historical, current or predicted information service;

logic for determining if the information from the market information service and the historical, current or predicted information service indicates that plural conditions have been met indicating that the high energy device should reduce energy usage; and

a control interface for signaling the high energy device to reduce usage.

2 . The controller as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the market information service provides short-term electricity prices.

3 . The controller as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the high energy device comprises an air conditioning system.

4 . The controller as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the historical, current or predicted information service comprises a weather data service.

5 . The controller as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the communications adapter comprises an IP-based communications adapter.

6 . The controller as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the communications adapter comprises a telephone-based communications adapter.

7 . The controller as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the logic comprises computer code for analyzing the information from the market information service and the historical, current or predicted information service.

8 . A method for controlling energy usage of a high energy device, the method comprising:

receiving information from a market information service and a historical, current or predicted information service;

determining if the information from the market information service and the historical, current or predicted information service indicates that plural conditions have been met indicating that the high energy device should reduce energy usage; and

signaling the high energy device to reduce usage.

9 . The method as claimed in claim 8 , wherein the market information service provides short-term electricity prices.

10 . The method as claimed in claim 8 , wherein the high energy device comprises an air conditioning system.

11 . The method as claimed in claim 8 , wherein the historical, current or predicted information service comprises a weather data service.

12 . The method as claimed in claim 8 , wherein the receiving comprises receiving via an IP-based communications adapter.

13 . The method as claimed in claim 8 , wherein the receiving comprises receiving via a telephone-based communications adapter.

14 . The method as claimed in claim 8 , wherein the determining comprises analyzing the information from the market information service and the historical, current or predicted information service.
