Abstract

Embodiments of the present invention provide a microstrip-coupled dipole antenna. A microstrip of the antenna may be formed in a plane and coupled to a transmission line such that the microstrip is operable to transfer electromagnetic energy fed to it by the transmission line to a dipole structure that, in turn, radiates a broadband electromagnetic signal.

Claims (26)

1. An antenna, comprising:

a dipole structure comprising a first antenna conductor and a second antenna conductor, the first antenna conductor and the second antenna conductor separated by a dipole gap;

a feed structure, the feed structure electromagnetically coupling the first antenna conductor and the second antenna conductor and operable to couple a signal to the first antenna conductor and the second antenna conductor wherein a first portion of the feed structure is above a portion of the first antenna conductor and a second portion of the feed structure is above a portion of the second antenna conductor; and

a notch filter, wherein the combination of the notch filter and the first antenna conductor or the second antenna conductor is operable to filter the signal.

2. The antenna of claim 1 , wherein the feed structure is a microstrip coupled line.

3. The antenna of claim 2 , wherein the microstrip coupled line extends along a first axis and a second axis.

4. The antenna of claim 1 , wherein the first antenna conductor or the second antenna conductor is coupled to a ground plane.

5. The antenna of claim 1 , wherein the feed structure is coupled to a feed point operable to be coupled to a radio apparatus.

6. The antenna of claim 5 , wherein the feed point is coupled to one or more matching devices, wherein the matching devices may balance impedance or filter frequencies.

7. The antenna of claim 6 , wherein the feed point is coupled to a matching stub.

8. The antenna of claim 6 , wherein the feed point is coupled to a notched matching stub operable to filter frequencies.

9. The antenna of claim 1 , wherein the first antenna conductor comprises a first set of teeth and the second antenna conductor comprises a second set of teeth.

10. The antenna of claim 9 , wherein the combination of the notch filter and the first set of teeth or the second set of teeth is operable to filter the signal.

11. The antenna of claim 1 , wherein the first antenna conductor comprises a first cutout and the second antenna conductor comprises a second cutout.

12. The antenna of claim 1 , wherein the feed structure is formed on a first side of a dielectric and the dipole structure is formed on a second side of the dielectric, wherein the first side and the second side of the dielectric are in the same plane.

13. An antenna, comprising:

a dipole structure comprising a first antenna conductor and a second antenna conductor, the first antenna conductor and the second antenna conductor separated by a dipole gap;

a microstrip coupled line, the microstrip coupled line electromagnetically coupled to the dipole structure and operable to receive a signal from the dipole structure, wherein a first portion of the microstrip coupled line is above a portion of the first antenna conductor and a second portion of the microstrip coupled line is above a portion of the second antenna conductor; and

a notch filter, wherein the combination of the notch filter and the first antenna conductor or the second antenna conductor is operable to filter the signal.

14. The antenna of claim 13 , wherein the microstrip coupled line extends along a first axis and a second axis.

15. The antenna of claim 13 , wherein the first antenna conductor or the second antenna conductor is coupled to a ground plane.

16. The antenna of claim 13 , wherein the microstrip coupled line is coupled to a feed point operable to be coupled to a radio apparatus.

17. A method, comprising:

producing a dipole structure, wherein the dipole structure comprises a first antenna conductor and a second antenna conductor, the first antenna conductor and the second antenna conductor separated by a dipole gap;

positioning a microstrip coupled line above the dipole structure, wherein a first portion of the microstrip coupled line is above a portion of the first antenna conductor and a second portion of the microstrip coupled line is above a portion of the second antenna conductor, wherein the microstrip coupled line electromagnetically couples the first antenna conductor and the second antenna conductor and is operable to couple a signal to the first antenna conductor and the second antenna conductor; and

positioning a notch filter above the first antenna conductor or the second antenna conductor, wherein the combination of the notch filter and the first antenna conductor or the second antenna conductor is operable to filter the signal.
