Abstract

A surgical device is disclosed which includes a handle portion, a central body portion and a SULU. The SULU includes a proximal body portion, an intermediate pivot member and a tool assembly. The intermediate pivot member is pivotally secured to the proximal body portion about a first pivot axis and the tool assembly is pivotally secured to the intermediate pivot member about a second pivot axis which is orthogonal to the first pivot axis. The SULU includes a plurality of articulation links which are operably connected to the tool assembly by non-rigid links. The articulation links are adapted to releasably engage articulation links positioned in the central body portion. The body portion articulation links are connected to an articulation actuator which is supported for omni-directional movement to effect articulation of the tool assembly about the first and second axes. The handle portion includes a spindle and barrel assembly drive mechanism for advancing and retracting a drive member positioned in the tool assembly. In one embodiment, the tool assembly includes a cartridge assembly having a plurality of staples and an anvil assembly.

Claims (29)

1. A surgical stapling device, comprising:

a handle portion including drive mechanism slidably positioned in the handle portion, the drive mechanism being configured and dimensioned to selectively engage a firing rack and a retraction rack;

an elongated body portion extending distally from the handle portion; and

a tool assembly supported on a distal end of the elongated body portion, the tool assembly including a knife bar movably supported therein, wherein the firing rack and the retraction rack are each independently connected to the knife bar via a cable.

2. The surgical stapling device of claim 1 , wherein the tool assembly includes an anvil assembly and a cartridge assembly.

3. The surgical stapling device of claim 1 , wherein the handle portion further includes a spindle.

4. The surgical stapling device of claim 3 , wherein the spindle includes a pair of guide tracks, the guide tracks being configured and dimensioned to slidably receive the firing rack and the retraction rack.

5. The surgical stapling device of claim 3 , wherein the spindle has a pinion for engaging gear teeth on the firing rack and the retraction rack.

6. The surgical stapling device of claim 1 , further including a pivot member which is pivotably connected to the elongated body portion about a first pivot axis and pivotably connected to the tool assembly about a second pivot axis such that the tool assembly is pivotal in relation to the elongated body portion about the first and second pivot axis.

7. The surgical stapling device of claim 6 , wherein the first pivot axis is substantially orthogonal to the second pivot axis.

8. The surgical stapling apparatus according to claim 7 , wherein the actuation sled is movable from a proximal end of the tool assembly to a distal end of the tool assembly in response to movement of the knife bar from a. proximal end of the tool assembly to a distal end of the tool assembly.

9. The surgical stapling device according to claim 1 , wherein the tool assembly further includes an actuation sled which is movably supported within the tool assembly.

10. A surgical stapling device, comprising:

a handle portion including drive mechanism slidably positioned in the handle portion, the drive mechanism being configured and dimensioned to selectively engage a firing rack and a retraction rack;

an elongated body portion extending distally from the handle portion;

a pivot member connect to the elongated body portion; and

a tool assembly pivotably connected to the pivot member, wherein the drive mechanism includes a firing pawl, a refraction pawl, and a grasper pawl.

11. The surgical stapling device of claim 10 , wherein the firing rack includes a set of gear teeth being engageable with the firing pawl.

12. The surgical stapling device of claim 11 , wherein the firing pawl is urged into operative engagement with the firing rack by a biasing member.

13. The surgical stapling device of claim 10 , wherein the retraction rack includes a set of gear teeth being engageable with the retraction pawl.

14. The surgical stapling device of claim 13 , wherein the retraction pawl is urged into operative engagement with the retraction rack by a biasing member.

15. A surgical stapling device, comprising:

a handle portion including drive mechanism slidably positioned in the handle portion, the drive mechanism being configured and dimensioned to selectively engage a firing rack and a retraction rack;

an elongated body portion extending distally from the handle portion;

a pivot member connect to the elongated body portion; and

a tool assembly pivotably connected to the pivot member, wherein the handle portion further includes a spindle, further including an indicator ring positioned about the spindle, the indicator ring being secured to and movable with the retraction rack.

16. The surgical stapling, device of claim 15 , wherein the handle portion further includes a window such that the indicator ring is viewable therethrough.

17. The surgical stapling device of claim 16 , wherein the indicator ring is colored to facilitate viewing through the window of the handle portion.

18. The surgical stapling device of claim 16 , wherein the window is a transparent portion of the handle portion.
