Abstract

Methods and compositions for the treatment of lung disease such as emphysema and/or bronchopulmonary dysplasia in a mammal. Also disclosed are methods and compositions promoting the formation of alveolar septa and increasing the gas-exchange surface area of a mammalian lung, and for the prevention and/or treatment of alveolar destruction.

Claims (19)

. A method for the treatment or inhibition of alveolar destruction in a mammal comprising administering a pharmaceutically effective amount of an RARγ agonist having specific RAR modulating activity, wherein said RARγ agonist is not an agonist of RARβ.

. The method of claim 1 wherein said RARγ agonist is not specific to RARβ.

. The method of claim 1 wherein said RARγ agonist is not specific to RARα.

. The method of claim 1 wherein said RARγ agonist is not specific to RARβ or RARα.

. The method of claim 1 wherein said composition further comprises said RARγ agonist in dissolved form.

. The method of claim 5 wherein said RARγ agonist is not specific to RARβ.

. The method of claim 5 wherein said RARγ agonist is not specific to RARα.

. The method of claim 5 wherein said RARγ agonist is not specific to RARβ or RARα.

. A method for the treatment or inhibition of alveolar destruction in a mammal comprising the step of administering to said mammal a therapeutically effective amount of an RARγ agonist, wherein said RARγ agonist is not an agonist of RARα.

. The method of claim 9 , wherein the RARγ agonist is an RARγ selective agonist.

. The method of claim 9 , wherein the RARγ agonist has a K d value for the RARγ receptor isotype that is at least 10 times lower than the K d value for the RARβ receptor isotype.

. The method of claim 9 , wherein the RARγ agonist has a K d value for the RARγ receptor isotype that is at least 25 times lower than the K d value for the RARα receptor isotype.

. The method of claim 1 , wherein the RARγ agonist has a K d value for the RARγ receptor isotype that is at least 10 times lower than the K d value for the RARα receptor isotype.

. The method of claim 1 , wherein the RARγ agonist has a K d value the RARγ receptor isotype that is at least 25 times lower than the K d value for the RARα receptor isotype.

. The method of claim 9 , wherein the mammal is a human.

. The method of claim 10 , wherein the mammal is a human.

. The method of claim 11 , wherein the mammal is a human.

. The method of claim 12 , wherein the mammal is a human.

. The method of claim 13 , wherein the mammal is a human.
