Abstract

A photoacoustic sensor includes a sensor system for photoacoustic detection, at least one noise canceling pressure sensor and a control system in operative connection with the noise canceling pressure sensor to actively cancel the effects of noise in the environment on the sensor system. Another photoacoustic sensor includes a measurement volume, a source of light energy, a photoacoustic pressure sensor, and at least one vibration canceling sensor (for example, a microphone or an accelerometer). A further photoacoustic sensor includes a measurement volume, a source of light energy and a photoacoustic pressure sensor. The measurement volume has an inner surface that is continuously curved over substantially the entire inner surface other than where a window in optical connection with the source of light intersects the measurement volume.

Claims (20)

1. A photoacoustic sensor for measuring an analyte gas in an environment, the photoacoustic sensor comprising a sensor system for photoacoustic detection, at least one noise canceling pressure sensor a control system in operative connection with the noise canceling pressure sensor to actively cancel the effects of noise in the environment on the sensor system, and a speaker, the speaker being operative to be driven with a signal generally inverse to an output signal of the noise cancelling pressure sensor.

2. The photoacoustic sensor of claim 1 wherein the sensor system includes a measurement volume, a source of light energy and a photoacoustic pressure sensor.

3. The photoacoustic sensor of claim 2 wherein the noise canceling pressure sensor is a first microphone and the photoacoustic pressure sensor is a second microphone.

4. The photoacoustic sensor of claim 2 wherein the noise canceling pressure sensor is in acoustic connection with an initial volume, which is in connection with the measurement volume, the photoacoustic sensor further comprising a barrier between the measurement volume and the initial volume.

5. The photoacoustic sensor of claim 4 wherein the barrier between the measurement volume and the initial volume is a first diffusion element operative to attenuate pressure waves while allowing diffusion of analyte gas molecules therethrough.

6. The photoacoustic sensor of claim 5 further comprising a second diffusion element positioned between the initial volume and an inlet of the photoacoustic gas sensor, the second diffusion element being operative to attenuate pressure waves while allowing diffusion of analyte gas molecules therethrough.

7. The photoacoustic sensor of claim 6 wherein the first diffusion element and the second diffusion element are sintered metal elements.

8. The photoacoustic sensor of claim 4 further comprising a source of light energy, the measurement volume having an inner surface that is continuously curved over substantially the entire inner surface other than where a window in optical connection with the source of light intersects the measurement volume.

9. The photoacoustic sensor of claim 4 wherein the volume of the initial volume is no greater than ten times the measurement volume.

10. The photoacoustic sensor of claim 4 wherein the volume of the initial volume is no greater than five times the measurement volume.

11. The photoacoustic sensor of claim 4 wherein the volume of the initial volume is no greater than the measurement volume.

12. The photoacoustic sensor of claim 4 further comprising at least one vibration canceling sensor that is not in acoustic connection with the measurement volume or with the environment.

13. The photoacoustic sensor of claim 12 wherein the photoacoustic pressure sensor is a first microphone and the vibration canceling sensor is a second microphone.

14. A photoacoustic sensor for measuring an analyte gas in an environment, the photoacoustic sensor comprising a measurement volume, a source of light energy, a photoacoustic microphone, and at least one vibration canceling sensor, wherein the vibration canceling sensor is not in acoustical connection with the measurement volume or with the environment.

15. The photoacoustic sensor of claim 14 wherein the vibration canceling sensor is a microphone.

16. The photoacoustic sensor of claim 14 further comprising at least one noise canceling pressure sensor and a control system in operative connection with the noise canceling pressure sensor to actively cancel the effects of noise in the environment on the sensor system.

17. The photoacoustic sensor of claim 16 wherein the noise canceling pressure sensor is a microphone.

18. The photoacoustic sensor of claim 16 further comprising a speaker, the speaker being operative to be driven with a signal generally inverse to an output signal of the noise canceling sensor.

19. The photoacoustic sensor of claim 14 wherein the measurement volume has an inner surface that is continuously curved over substantially the entire inner surface other than where a window in optical connection with the source of light intersects the measurement volume.

20. The photoacoustic sensor of claim 19 wherein the inner surface is spherical over substantially the entire inner surface other than where the window intersects the measurement volume.
