Abstract

This invention relates to blends of polyethylene and polypropylene useful to make films for packaging of flowable materials, in particular liquids. In addition to possessing good flex crack resistance, these films can withstand steam sterilization and/or aseptic packaging conditions as they have Hot Tack Initiation Temperatures in the range of from about 100° C. to about 140° C. and Hot Tack Strengths of not more than 5 N/inch in the temperature range from 100° C. to 150° C.

Claims (34)

1. A flowable material packaging film comprising, at least a resin blend of:

(a) from about 33 wt % to about 80 wt % of at least one ethylene-C 4 to C 10 -α-olefin interpolymer, having a melt index of from 0.4 to 1.5 g/10 min (190° C., 2.15 kg), and a density of from 0.900 to 0.916 g/cm 3 ; and

(b) from about 67 wt % to about 20 wt % of at least one heterogeneous interpolymer of propylene:

(i) with ethylene, or

(ii) with ethylene and butene,

said at least one heterogeneous interpolymer of propylene comprising from about 71 mol % to about 86 mol % propylene, and from about 29 mol % to about 14 mol % ethylene or ethylene and butene;

wherein said at least one heterogeneous interpolymer of propylene has an overall weight average molecular weight (M W ) of at least about 400,000, a xylene soluble phase of not less than 30 wt %, with the xylene soluble phase having a M W of at least about 275,000;

wherein said at least one heterogeneous interpolymer of polypropylene has a density of from 0.875 to 0.91 g/cm 3 ;

wherein said flowable material packaging film has a Hot-Tack Initiation Temperature in the range of from about 100° C. to about 140° C., and a Hot-Tack Strength of not more than about 5 N/inch in the temperature range of about 100° C. to about 150° C., when fabricated at a thickness of about 50 μm and tested using a JB Instrument Hot Tack Tester set at a 0.5 s dwell, 0.2 s delay time, 40 psi seal bar pressure and 250 mm/s peel rate; and

wherein said flowable material packaging film has a flex crack resistance such that it develops 5 or less pinholes per 300 cm 2 in 10,000 cycles of Gelbo Flex testing as measured according to ASTM F392.

2. The flowable material packaging film as recited in claim 1 , wherein the flowable material is a liquid.

3. The flowable material packaging film as recited in claim 1 , wherein the resin blend contains:

(a) from about 33 wt % to about 75 wt % of the at least one ethylene-C 4 to C 10 -α-olefin interpolymer; and

(b) from about 67 wt % to about 25 wt % of the at least one heterogeneous interpolymer of propylene with ethylene or ethylene and butene.

4. The flowable material packaging film as recited in claim 1 , wherein the resin blend contains:

(a) from about 50 wt % to about 75 wt % of the at least one ethylene-C 4 to C 10 -α-olefin interpolymer; and

(b) from about 50 wt % to about 25 wt % of the at least one heterogeneous interpolymer of propylene with ethylene or ethylene and butene.

5. The flowable material packaging film as recited in claim 1 , wherein the Hot Tack Strength ranges from about 1 to about 5N/inch at a temperature in the range of from about 120° C. to about 150° C.

6. The flowable material packaging film as recited in claim 1 , comprising one or more film processing additives for antioxidation, UV light stabilization, antiblocking, slippage, blend compatibility and ease of processing.

7. The flowable material packaging film as recited in claim 6 , wherein additional components are present selected from processing masterbatches, colorant masterbatches, at least one low density ethylene homopolymer, copolymer or interpolymer which is different from component (a) of the inventive blend, at least one polymer selected from the group comprising EVA, EMA, EAA, at least one polypropylene homopolymer or polypropylene interpolymer which is different from component (b) of the inventive blend, and wherein the additional components are present in the range of from 0 to about 30 wt %.

8. The flowable material packaging film of claim 7 , wherein the additional components are present in the range from about 3 to about 30 wt %.

9. A monofilm for use in making bags or pouches for packaging flowable materials comprising, the film as recited in claim 1 , and having a thickness of from about 20 to about 150 μm.

10. A multi-ply film structure for use in making bags or pouches for packaging flowable material comprising at least one ply of a monofilm as recited in claim 9 .
