Abstract

Systems and methods are provided for displaying a short message service (SMS) message on user media equipment, in which the user media equipment includes a set-top box and a display. In some embodiments, the set-top box receives an SMS message, wherein the SMS message includes information identifying a triggering event for displaying the SMS message. The SMS message is stored until the occurrence and detection of the identified triggering event. In response to detecting the occurrence of the identified triggering event, the SMS message is displayed on at least a portion of the display of the user media equipment.

storing the SMS message until occurrence of the identified triggering event;

detecting the occurrence of the identified triggering event; and

in response to detecting the occurrence of the identified triggering event, displaying the SMS message on at least a portion of the display of the user media equipment, wherein:

an interactive media guidance application is implemented and displayed on the user media equipment, the at least a portion of the display is at least a portion of an interactive media guidance application display, and

displaying the received SMS message comprises displaying the received SMS message in the at least a portion of the interactive media guidance application display.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the at least a portion of the display comprises a pop-up window, and

displaying the received SMS message comprises displaying the SMS message in the pop-up window.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the triggering event is selected from the group consisting of: a specified time of day, a specified date, a scheduled calendar event, a broadcast time of a specified program received by the set-top box, a display of a specified commercial on the user media equipment, a specified time interval prior to a broadcast time of a specified program received by the set-top box, an external event, and a display of a user-specified reminder on the user media equipment.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the set-top box is configured to receive a broadcast signal from a broadcast service, and

receiving the SMS message comprises receiving the SMS message via the broadcast signal.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein:

the broadcast signal is selected from the group consisting of: digital satellite broadcast signal, digital cable broadcast signal, and digital terrestrial broadcast signal.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the set-top box is integrated with the display.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the SMS message is an extended SMS message.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the extended SMS message comprises content selected from the group consisting of: a text message, at least one video clip, at least one audio clip, at least one picture, at least one universal resource locator, at least one ring tone, and at least one remotely-executable command.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the extended SMS message is selected from the group consisting of: a long SMS message, a concatenated SMS message, an enhanced SMS message, and a multimedia SMS message.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the SMS message comprises information identifying one or more intended recipients of the SMS message, and

receiving the SMS message comprises determining that at least one of the intended recipients of the SMS message is the set-top box.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the SMS message comprises:

receiving a plurality of SMS messages; and

concatenating the received plurality of SMS messages to create the SMS message.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the received plurality of SMS messages includes the information that identifies the triggering event.

13. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

receiving a user response to the displayed SMS message; and

sending the user response from the set-top box to a sender of the displayed SMS message.

14. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

receiving a user response to the displayed SMS message; and

sending the user response from the set-top box to a sender of the displayed SMS message, wherein the user response is sent via an email-to-SMS gateway.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the set-top box is configured to be in signal communication with a plurality of other recipient devices,

the plurality of other recipient devices are each configured to display SMS messages,

the received SMS message is addressed to at least one of the plurality of other recipient devices, and

receiving the SMS message comprises:

determining the at least one of the plurality of other recipient devices to which the received SMS message is addressed, and

forwarding the received SMS message to the at least one of the plurality of other recipient devices to which the received SMS message is addressed.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the triggering event is a display of specified content on the display.

17. A system for displaying an SMS message, the system comprising:

user media equipment comprising a set-top box and a display, wherein the set-top box is configured to:

receive the SMS message, wherein the SMS message includes information identifying a triggering event for displaying the SMS message, and wherein the identified triggering event for displaying the SMS message is independent of user action;

store the SMS message until occurrence of the identified triggering event;

detect the occurrence of the identified triggering event; and

in response to detecting the occurrence of the identified triggering event, display the SMS message on at least a portion of the display of the user media equipment, wherein

an interactive media guidance application is implemented and displayed on the user media equipment,

the at least a portion of the display is at least a portion of an interactive media guidance application display, and

the set-top box is further configured to display the received SMS message in the at least a portion of the interactive media guidance application display.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein:

the at least a portion of the display comprises a pop-up window, and

the set-top box is further configured to display the SMS message in the pop-up window.

19. The system of claim 17 , wherein the triggering event is selected from the group consisting of: a specified time of day, a specified date, a scheduled calendar event, a broadcast time of a specified program received by the set-top box, a display of a specified commercial on the user media equipment, a specified time interval prior to a broadcast time of a specified program received by the set-top box, an external event, and a display of a user-specified reminder on the user media equipment.

20. The system of claim 17 , wherein the set-top box is further configured to:
