Abstract

A method and apparatus for forming a beverage. A brewer may be operated so that when water or other beverage precursor is detected to be heated to a desired temperature, the liquid may be provided to a brew chamber to form a beverage. In one embodiment, detection of the water temperature may be performed by a temperature cut off switch (TCO) which is normally closed to provide power to a water heater, but opens when the water reaches a predetermined temperature. Opening of the TCO may cause delivery of the liquid to the brew chamber, e.g., by causing pressurization of a reservoir containing the liquid. In another embodiment, control of delivery of water from the reservoir may be made based on power interruption to the heater. For example, an air pump may be controlled to deliver air to the reservoir in response to power to the heater being cut off.

Claims (35)

1. A beverage forming machine comprising:

a brew chamber for receiving a brew cartridge;

a reservoir for receiving precursor liquid for use in forming a beverage, the reservoir being fluidly coupled to the brew chamber and having a lid that is movable between open and closed positions to open and close an access opening through which precursor liquid is provided into the reservoir;

a brew indication sensor for receiving an indication from a user to begin a brewing cycle;

a heater for heating precursor liquid in the reservoir;

a detector for detecting a desired temperature of precursor liquid in the reservoir;

an air pump for providing pressurized air to the reservoir to cause the precursor liquid to be delivered to the brew chamber; and

a controller constructed and arranged to control operation of the heater and the air pump and including a sensor to detect that the reservoir lid is in the closed position;

wherein the controller is adapted to begin a brewing cycle only if the reservoir lid is detected to be closed, is adapted to control the heater to heat the precursor liquid in response to the indication to begin a brewing cycle and is adapted to cause the air pump to deliver pressurized air to the reservoir in response to the detector detecting that the precursor liquid is at the desired temperature.

2. The machine of claim 1 , wherein the detector is a thermal cut off (TCO) switch that interrupts power to the heater when the precursor liquid is heated to the desired temperature.

3. The machine of claim 2 , wherein the controller causes the air pump to deliver pressurized air when the TCO interrupts power to the heater.

4. The machine of claim 1 , wherein the pressurized air delivered to the reservoir forces precursor liquid from the reservoir to the brew chamber.

5. The machine of claim 1 , wherein:

the brew chamber is arranged for receiving a beverage cartridge and has a lid that is movable between open and closed positions to open and close the brew chamber, the brew chamber adapted to substantially enclose the beverage cartridge with the lid in a closed position.

6. The machine of claim 5 , wherein the reservoir lid is adapted to pneumatically seal the reservoir access opening in a closed position.

7. The machine of claim 1 , wherein the brew indication sensor includes a switch that is contacted by a portion of the reservoir lid and provides the indication to begin a brewing cycle in response to closing of the reservoir lid.

8. The machine of claim 1 , wherein the controller controls the air pump to empty the reservoir of precursor liquid when the detector detects that the precursor liquid is at the desired temperature.

9. The machine of claim 1 , wherein:

the brew chamber has a lid that is movable between open and closed positions to open and close the brew chamber; and

the controller is arranged to detect that the brew chamber lid is in a closed position.

10. The machine of claim 1 , wherein the brew indication sensor is activated by touch of a user.

11. The machine of claim 1 , wherein the reservoir lid pneumatically seals the access opening in the closed position.

12. The machine of claim 11 , wherein the reservoir lid and access opening are arranged to permit a user to pour precursor liquid into the access opening with the reservoir lid in the open position.

13. The machine of claim 1 , wherein the controller is arranged to control the air pump to empty the reservoir of precursor liquid.

14. The machine of claim 1 , wherein the brew indication sensor is arranged to detect a presence of a cartridge in the brew chamber or precursor liquid in the reservoir.

15. The machine of claim 1 , wherein:

the brew chamber has a lid that is movable between open and closed positions to open and close the brew chamber; and

the machine further comprising:

a lid control mechanism that locks the reservoir lid in a position to block access to the access opening while the brew chamber lid is open and unlocks the lid to allow access to the access opening when the brew chamber lid is moved from the open position to the closed position.

16. The machine of claim 15 , wherein the lid control mechanism includes a lid carrier to which the reservoir lid and the brew chamber lid are mounted.

17. The machine of claim 16 , wherein the reservoir lid is movably mounted to the lid carrier, and the lid control mechanism includes a latch that locks the reservoir lid in a position relative to the lid carrier to block access to the access opening, and releases the reservoir lid when the brew chamber lid is moved to the closed position.

18. The machine of claim 17 , wherein the brew chamber lid is fixed relative to the lid carrier.

19. The machine of claim 17 , wherein closing the brew chamber lid causes the reservoir lid to move abruptly in an opening direction.

20. The machine of claim 15 , wherein after completing a beverage formation operation, the lid control mechanism prevents movement of the reservoir lid to permit access to the access opening until the brew chamber lid is opened and closed.

21. The machine of claim 1 , wherein the controller controls the heater so that heating of precursor liquid in the reservoir can not begin until the reservoir lid is in the closed position.
