Abstract

Bone cages are disclosed including devices for biocompatible implantation. The structures of bone are useful for providing living cells and tissues as well as biologically active molecules to subjects.

Claims (37)

1. A device comprising:

an implantable structure comprised of organic bone and micromachined to reshape a natural internal cavity thereof and to form a plurality of holes in the implantable structure that access the natural internal cavity; and

a semi-permeable component comprising a layer of confluent cells covering at least a portion of the plurality of holes of the implantable structure prior to implantation of the device into a subject.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the semi-permeable component at least partially surrounds one or more biologically active molecules.

3. The device of claim 2 , wherein the one or more biologically active molecules are produced by one or more living cells or tissues.

4. The device of claim 3 , wherein the one or more living cells or tissues are at least partially enclosed by the semi-permeable component.

5. The device of claim 3 , for implantation in a subject, wherein the one or more living cells or tissues are autologous, allogeneic or xenogeneic with respect to the subject.

6. The device of claim 3 , wherein the one or more living cells or tissues are genetically engineered.

7. The device of claim 2 , wherein the semi-permeable component at least partially surrounds the one or more biologically active molecules.

8. The device of claim 1 , wherein the implantable structure at least partially surrounds the semi-permeable component.

9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the semi-permeable component at least partially surrounds the implantable structure.

10. The device of claim 1 , for implantation in a subject, wherein the organic bone is autologous with respect to the subject.

11. The device of claim 2 , wherein the organic bone binds the one or more biologically active molecules.

12. The device of claim 1 , wherein the organic bone is treated to at least partially prevent restructuring.

13. The device of claim 1 , wherein the organic bone is designed to be at least partially restructured.

14. The device of claim 1 , wherein the organic bone is at least partially resorbable.

15. The device of claim 1 , for implantation in a subject, wherein the organic bone is immunogenic with respect to the subject.

16. The device of claim 1 , for implantation in a subject, wherein the organic bone is non-immunogenic with respect to the subject.

17. The device of claim 1 , wherein the organic bone is micro-machined to at least partially form an internal cavity.

18. A device comprising:

an implantable structure comprised of anorganic bone and micromachined to reshape a natural internal cavity thereof and to form a plurality of holes in the implantable structure that access the natural internal cavity; and

a semi-permeable component comprising a layer of confluent cells covering at least a portion of the plurality of holes of the implantable structure prior to implantation of the device into a subject.

19. The device of claim 18 , wherein the anorganic bone is demineralized and freeze-dried bone.

20. A device comprising:

an implantable structure for a subject comprised of allogeneic bone and micromachined to reshape a natural internal cavity thereof and to form a plurality of holes in the implantable structure that access the natural internal cavity; and

a semi-permeable component comprising a layer of confluent cells covering at least a portion of the plurality of holes of the implantable structure prior to implantation of the device into the subject.

21. The device of claim 20 , wherein the subject is an animal.

22. The device of claim 21 , wherein the animal is selected from the group consisting of a domesticated animal, a farm animal, a marine animal, a sport animal, a wild animal, a research animal, a zoo animal, a bird, an amphibian, a reptile, a fish, and a mammal.

23. The device of claim 22 , wherein the mammal is a human.

24. A device comprising:

an implantable structure for a subject comprised of xenogeneic bone and micromachined to reshape a natural internal cavity thereof and to form a plurality of holes in the implantable structure that access the natural internal cavity; and

a semi-permeable component comprising a layer of confluent cells covering at least a portion of the plurality of holes of the implantable structure prior to implantation of the device into the subject.

25. A device comprising:

an implantable structure comprised of bone and micromachined to reshape a natural internal cavity thereof and to form a plurality of holes in the implantable structure that access the natural internal cavity;

a semipermeable component comprising a layer of confluent cells covering at least a portion of the plurality of holes of the implantable structure prior to implantation of the device into a subject; and

one or more living cells or tissues genetically engineered to release one or more biologically active molecules at least partially enclosed within the semi-permeable component.

26. The device of claim 25 , wherein the semipermeable component comprises the one or more living cells or tissues genetically engineered to release the one or more biologically active molecules.
