Abstract

A dynamic subsidence plate is described having a first plate member and a second plate member in sliding engagement that may infinitely subside between a first and second assembled position. The plate includes a lock assembly associated with the first and second plate members. The lock assembly includes a ramp portion, an interference portion, and a bearing member situated between the ramp portion and the interference portion. The lock assembly of the plate is configured to allow movement of the first member with respect to the second member in a first direction in an infinite number of positions between a first assembled position and a second assembled position. Further, the lock assembly alternatively prevents movement of the first member with respect to the second member in an opposite second direction between the first and second assembled positions.

Claims (36)

1. A dynamic subsidence device comprising:

a first member having a ramp portion;

a second member contacting the first member and having an interference portion, the first and second members being moveable with respect to one another;

a bearing member situated between the ramp portion of the first member and the interference portion of the second member,

wherein the bearing member is freely seated between the ramp portion and interference portion when the first member is moving with respect to the second member in a first direction and wherein the bearing member directly contacts both the ramp and interference portions and is locked therebetween to prevent movement of the first member with respect to the second member in a second direction; and

an access hole associated with at least one of the first and second members to permit access of an instrument therethrough such that when the bearing member is locked between the ramp and interference portions, the instrument may dislodge the bearing member and push the bearing member up the ramp portion to allow movement of the first and second members in the first direction,

wherein the first member further includes a first prong and a second prong, the first prong of the first member having a male portion and a receiving portion, the second prong of the first member including the ramp portion, and

wherein the second member further includes a first prong and a second prong, the first prong of the second member having a female portion configured to receive the male portion of the first prong of the first member and a guidance portion configured to engage the receiving portion of the first prong of the first member, the second prong of the second member including the interference portion.

2. The dynamic subsidence device of claim 1 , wherein the ramp portion is a curved ramp.

3. The dynamic subsidence device of claim 1 , wherein the first member further includes at least one vertical slot.

4. The dynamic subsidence device of claim 3 , wherein the second member further includes at least two apertures, wherein the first and second member are prevented from disengaging when the vertical slot is situated between the at least two apertures and a pin is placed through the at least one of the at least two apertures and the vertical slot.

5. The dynamic subsidence device of claim 4 , wherein the first member includes at least one opening for receiving a fastener therein for attaching the first member to a vertebral body of the spine, and wherein the second member includes at least one opening for receiving a fastener therein for attaching the second member to a vertebral body of the spine.

6. The dynamic subsidence device of claim 1 , wherein the bearing member is a ball.

7. A dynamic subsidence device comprising:

a first member having a protruding end including a ramp portion;

a second member having a receiving end configured to slidably receive the protruding end of the first member, the receiving end of the second member including an interference portion;

a bearing member situated between the ramp portion of the first member and the interference portion of the second member,

wherein the bearing member is freely seated between the ramp portion and interference portion when the first member is moving with respect to the second member in a first direction and wherein the bearing member directly contacts both the ramp and interference portions and is locked therebetween to prevent movement of the first member with respect to the second member in an opposite second direction; and

an access hole associated with at least one of the first and second members to permit access of an instrument therethrough such that when the bearing member is locked between the ramp and interference portions, the instrument may dislodge the bearing member and push the bearing member up the ramp portion to allow movement of the first and second members in the first direction,

wherein the first member further includes a first prong and a second prong, the first prong of the first member having a male portion and a receiving portion, the second prong of the first member including the ramp portion, and

wherein the second member further includes a first prong and a second prong, the first prong of the second member having a female portion configured to receive the male portion of the first prong of the first member and a guidance portion configured to engage the receiving portion of the first prong of the first member, the second prong of the second member including the interference portion.

8. The dynamic subsidence device of claim 7 , wherein the ramp portion is a curved ramp.

9. The dynamic subsidence device of claim 7 , wherein the first member further includes at least one vertical slot arranged on the protruding end.

10. The dynamic subsidence device of claim 9 , wherein the second member further includes at least two apertures, wherein the first and second member are prevented from disengaging when the vertical slot is situated between the at least two apertures and a pin is placed through at least one of the at least two apertures of the second member and the vertical slot of the first member.

11. The dynamic subsidence device of claim 10 , wherein the first member includes at least one opening for receiving a fastener therein for attaching the first member to a vertebral body of the spine, and wherein the second member includes at least one opening for receiving a fastener therein for attaching the second member to a vertebral body of the spine.

12. The dynamic subsidence device of claim 7 , wherein the bearing member is a ball.

13. A dynamic subsidence device comprising:

a first member having a first prong and a second prong, the first prong of the first member having a male portion and a receiving portion, the second prong having a ramp portion;

a second member for receiving the first member, the second member having a first prong and a second prong, the first prong of the second member having a female portion configured to receive the male portion of the first prong of the first member and a guidance portion configured to engage the receiving portion of the first prong of the first member, the second prong of the second member having an interference portion;

a bearing member freely seated between the ramp portion of the second prong of the first member and the interference portion of the second prong of the second member when the first member is moving with respect to the second member in a first direction and is locked between and directly contacts both the ramp portion of the second prong of the first member and the interference portion of the second prong of the second member when the first member is moving with respect to the second member in an opposite second direction; and

an access hole associated with at least one of the first and second members to permit access of an instrument therethrough such that when the bearing member is locked between the ramp and interference portions, the instrument may dislodge the bearing member and push the bearing member up the ramp portion to allow movement of the first and second members in the first direction.

14. The dynamic subsidence device of claim 13 , wherein the ramp portion is a curved ramp.
