Power control and modulation of switched-mode power amplifiers with one or more stages
View Patent ↗This invention controls and modulates switched-mode power amplifiers to enable the production of signals that include amplitude modulation (and possibly, but not necessarily, phase modulation), the average power of which may be controlled over a potentially wide range.
1. A control circuit for producing an amplitude modulated output signal in an amplifier device, comprising:
a logic control circuit configured to vary an amplitude of a phase modulated input signal that is supplied as a drive signal to an input port of the amplifier device in accordance with a desired characteristic of an output signal of the amplifier device,
wherein the logic control circuit selectively varies the amplitude of the phase modulated input signal by comparing a desired amplitude of the output signal with a threshold value, and reduces the amplitude of the phase modulated input signal when the desired amplitude of the output signal is less than the threshold value, and
wherein the amplifier device is controlled without continuous or frequent measurement and feedback adjustment of the output signal.
2. The control circuit of claim 1 , wherein the threshold value is dependent on a desired average output power.
3. The control circuit of claim 1 , wherein when the desired amplitude of the output signal is more than the threshold value, the logic control circuit sets the amplitude of the phase modulated input signal to a predetermined value.
4. The control circuit of claim 3 , wherein the predetermined value is dependent on a desired average output power.
