Alkyl sulfate free and orthophosphate free dentifrice composition comprising fluoride source and a silica dental abrasive
View Patent ↗A dentifrice composition is described for combating dental erosion and/or tooth wear comprising a fluoride ion source and a silica dental abrasive, the dentifrice having a Relative Dentine Abrasivity (RDA) value from 20 to 60 and a pH in the range of 6.5 to 7.5 and being free of an orthophosphate buffer or a water soluble salt of a C 10-18 alkyl sulfate.
1. A method of combating dental erosion and/or tooth wear which comprises applying to an individual in need thereof an effective amount of an aqueous dentifrice composition comprising:
sodium fluoride in an amount from 1150 ppm to 3500 ppm of fluoride ions;
0.1% to 5% by weight of cocamidopropyl betaine as the sole surfactant;
2% to 10% by weight of a silica dental abrasive;
2 to 8% by weight of potassium nitrate;
the dentifrice having a Relative Dentine Abrasivity (RDA) value from 20 to 60 and a pH in the range 6.5 to 7.5, and wherein the composition is free of an orthophosphate buffer, a water-soluble salt of a C 10-18 alkyl sulphate a calcium salt and a further anti-erosion agent; and
wherein the composition enhances fluoride uptake into the teeth and is able to harden and thereby protect teeth from an acidic erosive challenge and is able to reharden enamel softened by an acidic erosive challenge.
2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the RDA of the dentifrice is from 25 to 50.
3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the RDA of the dentifrice is from 25 to 40.
4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the pH is in the range 6.8 to 7.2.
5. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising titanium dioxide as an opacifying agent in an amount from 0.05 to 2% by weight of the total composition.
