Abstract

A method is provided, including physically contacting a gastric implantation site of a stomach via a transluminal approach, physically contacting the site via a transabdominal approach, stabilizing the site, and implanting an electrode at the site based on the physical contact provided by the transluminal and transabdominal approach. Other embodiments are also described.

Claims (20)

1. A method, comprising:

passing an abdominal cavity apparatus into a lumen of a stomach of a patient, the abdominal cavity apparatus including a controller, and at least one electrode that is electrically coupled to the controller;

pushing the controller through a wall of the stomach to an extra-gastric site within an abdominal cavity of the patient until no portion of the controller is within the lumen of the stomach;

thereafter, moving the controller in a manner that places the at least one electrode in contact with the stomach wall; and

leaving the at least one electrode in contact with the stomach wall, and the controller at the extra-gastric site.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein passing the abdominal cavity apparatus into the lumen of the stomach comprises passing, into the lumen of the stomach, an endoscope to which the abdominal cavity apparatus is coupled.

3. The method according to claim 2 , wherein moving the controller comprises using the endoscope to the pull the controller toward the wall of the stomach.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the electrode apparatus includes at least one needle electrode, and wherein leaving the electrode comprises leaving the needle electrode in the stomach wall.

5. The method according to claim 1 ,

wherein the abdominal cavity apparatus further includes an insertion head, which includes the controller,

wherein pushing the controller comprises pushing the insertion head through the wall of the stomach to the extra-gastric site until no portion of the insertion head is within the lumen of the stomach,

wherein moving the controller comprises moving the insertion head in the manner that place the at least one electrode in contact with the stomach wall, and

wherein leaving the controller comprises leaving the insertion head at the extra-gastric site.

6. The method according to claim 5 , wherein the at least one electrode is initially positioned within the insertion head, and further comprising releasing the at least one electrode from the insertion head for placement in contact with the wall of the stomach.

7. The method according to claim 5 , wherein moving the insertion head comprises rotating the insertion head in order to bring the at least one electrode in contact with the wall of the stomach.

8. The method according to claim 1 , wherein moving the controller comprises rotating the controller in order to insert the at least one electrode into the wall of the stomach.

9. The method according to claim 1 , wherein pushing comprises pushing the controller through the wall of the stomach to the extra-gastric site until the controller is entirely outside the stomach.

10. The method according to claim 1 , wherein moving the controller comprises moving the controller in a manner that places the at least one electrode in the stomach wall, and wherein leaving the at least one electrode comprises leaving the at least one electrode in the stomach wall.

11. The method according to claim 10 , wherein the stomach wall includes a muscular layer, and wherein leaving the at least one electrode comprises leaving the at least one electrode in the muscular layer.

12. The method according to claim 10 , wherein the stomach wall includes a submucosal layer, and wherein leaving the at least one electrode comprises leaving the at least one electrode in the submucosal layer.
