Eukaryotic Microorganisms for producing lipids and antioxidants
Disclosed are compositions and methods related to eukaryotic microorganisms that can produce unsaturated fatty acids which can be purified and use.
1. An isolated eukaryotic microorganism having an 18S sequence, wherein the 18S sequence has at least 97% identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:1.
2. The isolated microorganism of claim 1 , wherein the microorganism is from the order Thraustochytriales.
3. The isolated microorganism of claim 1 , wherein the microorganism is from the family Thraustochytriaceae.
4. The isolated microorganism of claim 1 , wherein the microorganism is from the genus Thraustochytrium.
5. The isolated microorganism of claim 1 , wherein the microorganism is Thraustochytrium sp.
6. The isolated microorganism of claim 1 , wherein the microorganism is Thraustochytrium aureum.
7. The isolated microorganism of claim 1 , wherein the microorganism is Thraustochytrium roseum.
8. The isolated microorganism of claim 1 , wherein the microorganism is Thraustochytrium striatum.
9. The isolated microorganism of claim 1 , wherein the microorganism is from the genus Schizochytrium.
10. The isolated microorganism of claim 1 , wherein the microorganism is Schizochytrium sp.
11. The isolated microorganism of claim 1 , wherein the microorganism comprises an omega 3 or omega 6 fatty acid.
12. The isolated microorganism of claim 1 , wherein the microorganism comprises docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), or docosapentaenoic acid (DPA).
13. The isolated microorganism of claim 1 , wherein the microorganism produces a lipid or fatty acid fraction of at least about 30 wt. % to 80 wt. %.
14. The isolated microorganism of claim 13 , wherein the lipid comprises DHA.
15. The isolated microorganism of claim 13 , wherein the lipid composition comprises from about 15 wt. % fatty acid fraction to about 60 wt. % fatty acid fraction of n-3 DHA, from about 4 wt. % fatty acid fraction to about 12 wt. % fatty acid fraction of n-6 DPA, or from about 0 wt. % fatty acid fraction to about 3 wt. % fatty acid fraction of n-3 EPA.
16. The isolated microorganism of claim 13 , wherein the lipid composition comprises from about 15 wt. % fatty acid fraction to about 60 wt. % fatty acid fraction of n-3 DHA.
17. The microorganism of claim 1 , wherein the microorganism is from the family Thraustochytriaceae and has ATCC accession number PTA-6245.
18. A method of preparing a lipid composition, the method comprising: culturing the eukaryotic microorganism of claim 1 , in a heterotrophic medium, and isolating the lipid composition from the microorganism.
19. An isolated mutant of the eukaryotic microorganism of claim 1 , wherein the isolated mutant has an 18S sequence, wherein the 18S sequence has at least 97% identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:1.
20. The isolated microorganism of claim 1 , wherein the 18S sequence has at least 98% identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:1.
21. The isolated microorganism of claim 1 , wherein the 18S sequence has at least 99% identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:1.
22. An composition comprising an isolated eukaryotic microorganism having an 18S sequence, wherein the 18S sequence has at least 97% identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:1.
23. The composition of claim 22 , wherein the isolated eukaryotic microorganism is from the family Thraustochytriaceae and has ATCC accession number PTA-6245.
24. A nutritional supplement comprising the composition of claim 22 .
