Abstract

A system including an implantable neurostimulator device capable of modulating cerebral blood flow to treat epilepsy and other neurological disorders. In one embodiment, the system is capable of modulating cerebral blood flow (also referred to as cerebral perfusion) in response to measurements and other observed conditions. Perfusion may be increased or decreased by systems and methods according to the invention as clinically required.

Claims (23)

1. An implantable device for modulating cerebral blood flow in a human patient and configured to be implanted in the human patient, the device comprising:

a therapy output adapted to receive a signal and deliver a corresponding stimulus to the patient's brain in response thereto, wherein the stimulus changes a characteristic of the patient's cerebral blood flow; and

a therapy controller configured to automatically generate the signal representative of the stimulus based on measured cerebral blood flow and a determined cerebral blood flow trend and communicate the signal to the therapy output.

2. The implantable device of claim 1 , wherein the stimulus is adapted to increase perfusion.

3. The implantable device of claim 1 , wherein the stimulus is adapted to decrease perfusion.

4. The implantable device of claim 1 , wherein the therapy output comprises an optical stimulator.

5. The implantable device of claim 1 , wherein the therapy output comprises a thermal stimulator for heating or cooling.

6. The implantable device of claim 1 , wherein the therapy output comprises an electromagnetic stimulator.

7. The implantable device of claim 1 , wherein the therapy output comprises an ultrasonic transducer.

8. The implantable device of claim 1 , wherein the therapy output comprises a stimulation electrode.

9. The implantable device of claim 1 , wherein the signal is generated intermittently and regularly.

10. The implantable device of claim 1 , wherein the signal is generated in response to a detected change in a neurological condition.

11. An implantable device for modulating cerebral blood flow in a human patient and configured to be implanted in the human patient, the device comprising:

a therapy output adapted to receive a signal and deliver a corresponding stimulus to the patient's brain in response thereto, wherein the stimulus changes a characteristic of the patient's cerebral blood flow; and

a therapy controller configured to automatically generate the signal representative of the stimulus based on measured cerebral blood flow and a determined cerebral blood flow trend and communicate the signal to the therapy output, the therapy controller further adapted to initialize a cerebral blood flow trend value by performing a sequence of perfusion measurements and taking the average of the sequence and storing the average in a memory in a trend variable as a trend value.

12. The implantable device of claim 11 , the therapy controller further configured to compare the measured cerebral blood flow to the trend value and to determine whether to initiate an action based on the comparison.

13. The implantable device of claim 12 , the therapy controller further configured to determine whether to initiate an action based on the comparison by comparing the measured cerebral blood flow to the trend value added to a threshold value.

14. The implantable device of claim 13 wherein the threshold value is either a positive or a negative value.

15. The implantable device of claim 12 , the therapy controller further configured to determine whether to initiate an action based on the comparison by comparing the measured cerebral blood flow to the trend value multiplied by a threshold factor.

16. The implantable device of claim 15 wherein the threshold factor is either a positive or a negative value.

17. The implantable device of claim 15 wherein the threshold factor corresponds to a number greater than one.

18. The implantable device of claim 11 wherein the memory is located in the implantable device.

19. The implantable device of claim 11 wherein the memory is not located in the implantable device.
