Abstract

The invention is a wireless communications device, such as a cellular telephone, having sensors to generate data indicative of a physiological or contextual parameters of a user. A processor on the wireless communications device is adapted derive physiological state information of the user from the contextual or physiological parameters. The apparatus may include a central monitoring unit remote from the sensors for storing data and transmitting data to a recipient.

Claims (16)

1. A wearable apparatus for monitoring and reporting the physical activity of an individual, comprising:

a) a first sensor that continuously measures the resistance of said individual's skin to an electric current;

b) a second sensor that continuously measures a motion-related parameter of said individual;

c) a processing unit that receives said continuously measured resistance of said individual's skin to an electric current and said continuously measured motion-related parameter to derive data about the physical activity of said individual, and that generates feedback to said individual wherein said feedback is based on said data about the physical activity of said individual, wherein said feedback relates to at least one of the taking of medication, the engaging in a particular activity, the ingestion of a food or water, and the occurrence of a physiological condition;

d) an output facility in electronic communication with said processing unit to provide said feedback to said individual; and

e) a housing, wherein at least one of said first sensor and said second sensor are entirely supported by or entirely located within said housing.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said first sensor is a galvanic skin response sensor.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said second sensor is at least one of an accelerometer, a global-positioning sensor, and a body-position sensor.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said data about the physical activity of said individual is said individual's activity level.

5. A method of monitoring and reporting the physical activity of an individual with a wearable device having a housing, comprising the steps of:

a) continuously measuring the resistance of said individual's skin to an electric current with a first sensor, said first sensor being entirely supported by or entirely located within the housing of said wearable device;

b) continuously measuring a motion-related parameter of said individual with a second sensor, said second sensor being entirely supported by or entirely located within the housing of said wearable device;

c) the processor utilizing said continuously measured resistance of said individual's skin to an electric current and said continuously measured motion-related parameter to automatically derive data about the physical activity of said individual; and

d) the processor automatically generating and communicating feedback to said individual, wherein said feedback is based on said data about the physical activity of said individual, wherein said feedback relates to at least one of the taking of medication, the engaging in a particular activity, the ingestion of a food or water, and the occurrence of a physiological condition.

6. The method of claim 5 further comprising the step of the processor acquiring a subjective indication from the individual of how the individual feels.

7. The method of claim 6 further comprising the step of the processor correlating said data about the physical activity of said individual to said subjective indication.
