Abstract

A method for purchasing a selected item from a store includes: receiving a request for payment authorization from a sales terminal of the store, the request for payment authorization including an identifier of at least one selected item and a price for each selected item; presenting the price to a shopper; presenting a prompt to the shopper for acceptance of the price; receiving an indication from the shopper of the acceptance of the price; and encrypting a payment authorization signal using a public key of the store, the payment authorization signal confirming a purchase and including an encrypted version of a certificate of the shopper; and sending the payment authorization signal to the sales terminal to confirm the purchase.

Claims (30)

1 . A method for purchasing a selected item from a store, the method comprising:

receiving a request for payment authorization, the request for payment authorization comprising an identifier of at least one selected item and a price for the selected item;

presenting the price to a shopper;

presenting a prompt to the shopper for acceptance of the price;

receiving an indication from the shopper of the acceptance of the price;

encrypting the payment authorization using a public key of the store, the payment authorization signal confirming a purchase and comprising an encrypted version of a certificate of the shopper; and

sending the payment authorization signal to a sales terminal to confirm the purchase.

2 . The method of claim 1 further comprising verifying the payment authorization signal based on the certificate decrypted using a public key of the shopper.

3 . The method of claim 1 wherein the step of receiving the request for payment authorization comprises receiving and processing a radio signal.

4 . The method of claim 1 wherein the step of receiving the request for payment authorization comprises receiving and processing an infrared signal.

5 . The method of claim 1 further comprising requesting a personal identification code from the shopper as a condition for sending the payment authorization signal.

6 . The method of claim 5 further comprising receiving shopper information through a touch screen, the shopper information comprising the personal identification code of the shopper.

7 . The method of claim 5 further comprising receiving information through a roller wheel input device, the information comprising the personal identification code of the shopper.

8 . The method of claim 5 wherein the step of sending the payment authorization comprises displaying a two dimensional bar code comprising a payment authorization message.

9 . The method of claim 5 wherein the step of sending the payment authorization signal comprises displaying a sequence of one-dimensional bar codes comprising a confirmation of the purchase.

10 . The method of claim 1 wherein receiving the request for payment authorization comprises receiving the request from a sales terminal in the store.

11 . A method for selling an item by a store, the method comprising steps of:

receiving an indication of a shopper's intention to purchase the item;

transmitting a request for payment authorization for a purchase of the item to a mobile information processing device of the shopper, the request comprising a price for the item, an encrypted version of a certificate of the store, and an identification of the item;

receiving an encrypted message confirming the purchase of the item, the message comprising an encrypted certificate of a shopper; and

verifying the message confirming the purchase by decrypting the certificate using a private key of the store and by decrypting the certificate using a public key of the shopper.

12 . The method of claim 11 wherein the step of transmitting the request for payment comprises transmitting a radio signal to the mobile information processing device.

13 . The method of claim 11 wherein the step of transmitting the request for payment comprises transmitting an infrared signal to the mobile information processing device.

14 . The method of claim 11 wherein the step of receiving an encrypted message confirming the purchase of the item comprises receiving a radio signal.

15 . The method of claim 11 wherein the step of receiving an encrypted message confirming the purchase of the item comprises receiving an infrared signal.

16 . The method of claim 11 wherein the step of receiving an encrypted message confirming the purchase of the item comprises reading a bar code from the mobile information processing device.

17 . The method of claim 11 wherein the step of receiving an encrypted message confirming the purchase of the item comprises receiving information through a roller wheel input device, the information comprising the encrypted certificate of the shopper.

18 . The method of claim 11 wherein transmitting the request for the payment authorization comprises transmitting a signal.

19 . The method of claim 18 wherein transmitting the signal comprises displaying a two dimensional bar code comprising a request for payment authorization message.

20 . The method of claim 11 further comprising an initial step of broadcasting a store special comprising the price and identifier for the item, wherein the broadcast is able to be received by the mobile information processing device.
