Abstract

Systems and processes for producing one or more olefins are provided. In one or more embodiments, a C 4 containing feed can be dehydrogenated to provide a first product containing butene. The first product can be bypassed around an etherification reactor for converting isobutylene to methyl tert-butyl ether. All or any portion of the first product can be cracked to provide a second product containing propylene, ethylene and butane.

Claims (49)

1 ) A process for producing one or more olefins, comprising:

dehydrogenating a feed comprising one or more C 4 -containing compounds to provide a first product comprising butene;

bypassing the first product around an etherification reactor for converting isobutylene to methyl tert-butyl ether; and

cracking at least a portion of the first product to provide a second product comprising propylene, ethylene, and butane.

2 ) The process of claim 1 further comprising:

selectively separating at least a portion of the second product to provide a third product comprising propylene and a first recycle comprising butane; and

recycling at least a portion of the first recycle to the first product prior to cracking the first product.

3 ) The process of claim 1 further comprising:

selectively separating at least a portion of the second product to provide a third product comprising propylene and a first recycle comprising butane; and

recycling at least a portion of the first recycle to the feed prior to dehydrogenating the feed.

4 ) The process of claim 1 further comprising:

selectively separating at least a portion of the second product to provide a third product comprising propylene and a first recycle comprising butane;

recycling at least a portion of the first recycle to the first product prior to cracking the first product; and

recycling at least a portion of the first recycle to the feed prior to dehydrogenating the feed.

5 ) The process of claim 1 , wherein the first product is heated to a temperature from 90° C. to 370° C. prior to cracking the first product.

6 ) The process of claim 1 , wherein cracking at least a portion of the first product occurs at a temperature from 590° C. to 675° C.

7 ) The process of claim 1 , wherein cracking at least a portion of the first product occurs at a pressure from 40 kPa to 700 kPa.

8 ) The process of claim 1 , wherein the feed comprises a mixture having of from 40% to 95% by weight paraffinic hydrocarbons having 4 or more carbon atoms and 5% to 60% by weight olefinic hydrocarbons having 4 or more carbon atoms.

9 ) The process of claim 1 , wherein the first product comprises a mixture having of from 40% to 95% by weight olefinic hydrocarbons having 4 or more carbon atoms and 5% to 60% by weight paraffinic hydrocarbons having 4 or more carbon atoms.

10 ) The process of claim 1 , wherein a fluidized catalyst is used to crack all or any portion of the first product to provide the second product.

11 ) The process of claim 10 , wherein cracking the first product utilizes a catalyst to oil ratio of from about 5:1 to about 70:1.

12 ) The process of claim 10 , wherein cracking the first product occurs at a temperature from 550° C. to 650° C. when the first product comprises at least 90% by weight hydrocarbons having 4 carbon atoms.

13 ) A process for retrofitting a methyl tert-butyl ether process, comprising:

bypassing at least a portion of a first product around an existing etherification reactor for converting isobutylene to methyl tert-butyl ether, the first product comprising C 4 hydrocarbons; and

cracking at least a portion of the first product to provide a second product comprising ethylene, propylene, and butane.

14 ) The process of claim 13 , further comprising:

selectively separating at least a portion of the second product to provide a third product comprising propylene and a first recycle comprising butane; and

recycling at least a portion of the first recycle to the first product prior to cracking the first product.

15 ) The process of claim 13 , wherein the first product is heated to a temperature from 90° C. to 370° C. prior to cracking the first product.

16 ) The process of claim 13 , wherein cracking at least a portion of the first product occurs at a temperature from 590° C. to 675° C.

17 ) The process of claim 13 , wherein cracking at least a portion of the first product occurs at a pressure from 40 kPa to 700 kPa.

18 ) The process of claim 13 , wherein the first product comprises a mixture having from 40% to 95% by weight paraffinic hydrocarbons having 4 or more carbon atoms and 5% to 60% by weight olefinic hydrocarbons having 4 or more carbon atoms.

19 ) The process of claim 13 , wherein the second product comprises a mixture having from 40% to 95% by weight olefinic hydrocarbons having 4 or more carbon atoms and 5% to 60% by weight paraffinic hydrocarbons having 4 or more carbon atoms.

20 ) The process of claim 13 , wherein a fluidized catalyst is used to crack all or any portion of the first product to provide the second product.

21 ) The process of claim 20 , wherein cracking the first product utilizes a catalyst to oil ratio of from about 5:1 to about 70:1.

22 ) The process of claim 20 , wherein cracking the first product occurs at a temperature of from about 550° C. to about 650° C. when the first product comprises at least 90% by weight hydrocarbons having 4 carbon atoms.

23 ) A process for making propylene, comprising:

dehydrogenating a feed comprising butane to provide a first product comprising one or more C 4 hydrocarbons;

cracking at least a portion of the first product to provide a second product comprising propylene, ethylene, and butane;

selectively separating at least a portion of the second product to provide a third product comprising propylene and a first recycle comprising butane; and

recycling at least a portion of the first recycle to the feed prior to dehydrogenating the feed; and

recycling at least a portion of the first recycle to the first product prior to cracking the first product.

24 ) The process of claim 23 , wherein cracking at least a portion of the first product comprises contacting the first product with a catalyst consisting essentially of a zeolite.

25 ) The process of claim 23 , wherein the cracking is performed at conditions sufficient to provide a paraffin hydrocarbon conversion per pass of less than 50%.

26 ) The process of claim 23 , wherein the cracking occurs at a pressure from 40 kPa to 700 kPa.

27 ) The process of claim 23 , wherein the cracking occurs at a temperature from 590° C. to 675° C.

28 ) The process of claim 24 , wherein a catalyst to oil ratio is from 5:1 to 70:1.

29 ) The process of claim 23 , wherein the feed comprises a mixture having from 40% to 95% by weight paraffinic hydrocarbons having 4 or more carbon atoms and 5% to 60% by weight olefinic hydrocarbons having 4 or more carbon atoms.

30 ) The process of claim 23 , wherein the first product comprises a mixture having from 40% to 95% by weight olefinic hydrocarbons having 4 or more carbon atoms and 5% to 60% by weight paraffinic hydrocarbons having 4 or more carbon atoms.
